I think that was pretty obvious.

FWIW, I really don't think the performances reflected what Cocu wanted them to be doing, I think they just couldn't do what he wanted well enough to be effective in this league.

However, failure to get the players to do individually and collectively things they can do to a standard that wins games is why he had to go.

Anyway, it's done now. Onwards.

I do think he would have turned it around but appreciate that it’s a results business.

Mel should never have appointed Cocu if he wasn’t committed himself. He’s basically sold his ‘Derby Way’ rubbish to a young manager who shared his way of thinking.

Then Rooney became available and everything that was sold to Cocu went out the window. You don’t give someone a four year contract to build and then give him a big name like Rooney.

Mel isn’t great for the club. He’s done some good things but he sells a project that he isn’t prepared to see through.

So ok. Cocu has left. But I don’t want to hear anything more about the ‘Derby Way’, projects, bringing through academy players, etc. We have to go up and we have to go up in style (back to spending) otherwise we’ll just keep changing every 18 months.

The whole Rooney stunt was one of Mel's worst mistakes. It kept DCFC in the media spotlight , and we've seen a few good free kicks but a continuing decline in his contribution, a decreasing proportion of good passes. To think we could be stuck with him as manager is evidence of the continuing gypsy's curse.

The (long) Athletic article's own 'bullet points':

"The Athletic has spent the last 36 hours speaking to those around the club to understand what went wrong for Cocu (not forgetting the good things he did) and what happens next. We can reveal:

*Some felt the pre-season regime was not good enough for getting players fit
*There was a feeling Cocu wasn’t motivating the players enough as results and morale deteriorated
*Confusion over tactics and selection
*Decision taken by current regime, not the new owners, though they will appoint the new man
*Rooney wants the job on a permanent basis
*No ill-feeling towards Cocu or his staff, many felt he carried himself with dignity to the very end
*Appreciation for how he nurtured academy prospects
*Excitement now about the takeover being imminent and playing a more attacking style of football
*The statement on the club website made it clear how much they appreciated all Cocu and his assistants, Twan Scheepers and Chris van der Weerden, had done during “some extremely challenging situations” and how they promoted youth as well as donating their own money to help out during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s believed Cocu gave £60,000 to the Stay Safe, Stay Fit, Stay Connected initiative the club set up in the wake of the pandemic and subsequent lockdown. He also insisted on taking a hefty wage deferral."

Players rule the club then.
