Well that's your opinion mate, it's not mine but you've every right to express it in a democracy.

You see what worries me is that without a royal family democracy would be even further eroded..as it is we have to be very careful what we say these days.

Can't imagine there would be much freedom in a socialist republic, for example.

That's a first. Someone suggesting that a parasitic family are an aid to democracy.

Well alright, do away with 'em then...

And replace them with what? A president, a dictator?!

Tell me.. what's the alternative?

Loads of countries seem to manage. Why do people seem to think it's either the Queen or the USA and nothing in between?

I've seen England and Englishness rapidly disappearing before my eyes in the last..oh twenty years or more, and getting worse every bloody year..

Do away with the royal family and what you got left?

God help us!

Everything you had before...apart from a royal family.

...... hope in my lifetime elitism, establishment and royalty leave our way of life. Everything that's wrong with this country.

Being English is helping people picking them up while they are down. Not the other way around.

Good luck with that.

I think the anti royal sentiment in this country is always basically a protest against the fabulously rich (and therefore influential).

You will never get away from the mega-rich.

Same in most countries. For example, if you look at the history of the USA, the same surnames keep spinning through.

In Europe, many former ruling royal families are still hanging out, no longer doing head of state type stuff but still fabulously loaded.

If we had a referendum and decided to get shot of the Royal family I am guessing she would literally 'retire to the country.'

I personally do not want to see them go, they are a unique selling point for the UK. And we need all the USPs we can get our hands on right now.

Yes, everyone who needs help should be helped - education, housing etc. That is a separate argument concerning priorities.

No one specifically...I was referring to WhitehorseRam's comment about anti-royal sentiment being a protest against the fabulously rich.

What I will point to though is the survey result at the top of this thread...60-40 in favour of keeping the monarchy!

As per usual it's the dissenting minority making most of the noise..

Think I'll stick to football in future.

Or presenting alternatives and differing view points. Because someone is in the minority, they should shut up and know their place?

Spoken like a true royalist.

Ha!.. No I'm not saying that.. seems I'm in a minority here for a start..lol

I'm not even that much of a royalist ffs

I just believe this country is better with them than without them...is that alright?

I am not particularly royalist and have little time for the Queen. However, if she abdicated instead of hanging on in there unable to fulfil all her commitments because of her age, I would think that the country would benefit hugely from Charles stepping up to be King. I like his compassionate nature which this country is hugely in need of right now.

Just an observation -

I always think this is an interesting element about the Royals - the way that everyone thinks it is fair game to fearlessly take the p**s quite personally out of them in ways you wouldn't any other members of the super rich. If you did the above picture  treatment for, say, the owner of a big football club, I am guessing there might be some legal upshot (If he thought you were poking fun at his grandchild), and the mods on here would probably get sweaty-palmed.

Also questioning the parentage of some royals - would you do that if it was the son of an oligarch?

Maybe it shows how we feel we 'own' the royal family.

A new Heath spa resort at Sandringham, a castle themed hotel in Windsor and the worlds biggest Wetherspoons at Buckingham Palace.

Balmoral?  Nah, leave it, it's in Scotland.
