The amount the team cost to assemble never means anything. The results do. I've never understood the fascination with how much players are being paid or how much their transfer fee cost or how much money is in the game.

Yes! That's right! It's a game remember? Do you remember that game? Football? Not the "human trade" rubbish these meaningless facts and figures turn it into. 22 people kicking a ball around some grass. Everything else is arbitrary.

The amount a team costs is pretty important if you're the one paying for it.

This squad of players we have here at Derby was assembled very cheaply, it makes a massive difference that good players were sourced and signed on a low budget. Its the difference between  a club surviving or going out of business.

The last few years after that season in the prem haven't been brilliant, but the club consolidated, got rid of a huge wage bill and rebuilt slowly and steadily leaving a raite good squad of players.

To some of us it means a bit more than just buying your way out of it like the gumps have tried to do for the last 10 years.

It is obviously important to not spend too much on players, that goes without saying. But I don't get why whenever the team is doing well, people have to remind everyone how much the players cost. Is that really the important thing to celebrate right now?

Why not! We have a top team that cost very little. Its a better bragging right than having a top team that cost a fortune.

Working hard to achieve something is better than just buying it.

It's a good for the club, and it's a good sign for the future, but ultimately the fascination of the trade does get a bit much. One thing history has taught us is that the mix of people is as important as the mix of talent much of the time.

The real thing about our "cheap" squad though, is that it's nothing of the sort. We've not been out spending mega bucks, but ultimately we're still one of the bigger spenders in the league, only really topped by the sides that have been blowing those mega bucks. In terms of value for money, we've done brilliantly, but we're hardly doing things on a shoestring.
