I think if the recruitment team can find a right footed cb to partner Cashin, one who is a bit more mobile and athletic than our current options and complements Cashin’s attributes we will have a very solid foundation at the back. A league one (or championship 🤞) Vidic and Ferdinand type combo. There will be options that meet that description available on a free this summer, not the calibre of the two I named of course but someone with a bit more pace and mobility than Forsyth/Davies/Stearman to clean up after Cash occasionally gets caught under a high ball.As long as we can keep Cashin our defence for the future should be built around him and Rooney. If Bielik’s around next season and we build towards Warne’s 3 at the back I think a 3 of Rooney, Bielik and Cashin would be worth a look.

Rooney Forsyth Cashin Roberts
Bird (C) White
Knight Sibley Dobbin
Mcgoldrick
Subs- McGee, Davies, Smith, Hourihane, NML, Barkhuizen, Collins
- Some players are clearly knackered so we need to actually rotate the team, Rooney and Sibley have both been massively under-utilised.
- Feels like Sibley’s the fall guy again despite him winning us the game at Oxford, needed a run of games in the 10 following that but he’s played 45 minutes there since.
- White’s performance in the last game warrants another start, looks comfortable on the ball.
- We have a squad that suits playing passing football on the floor, so let’s play to our strengths, get Bird and White on the ball and stop sending long balls up to Mcgoldrick in the air where he won’t win it.

I probably sound like a broken record but I don’t get why he’s played quite so little minutes. He started 19 games in the championship last season (I know we didn’t have much choice in playing young players), played really well on his debut against Bournemouth, had a blinder against Fulham at pride park, even started in a battling 0-0 draw at Craven Cottage unless I’m mistaken? And our midfield was always strong despite how limited we were in other positions. Was even the first to have his contract extended in the summer. Would like to see him heavily involved next season.

- Rooney back in at right back, should’ve been at least on the bench against Fleetwood, not sure what White’s done to warrant that place ahead of him and Thompson, particularly Thompson who was starting championship games consistently last season. Not having Rooney on the bench meant we didn’t have him to bring on for Smith who was having an absolute stinker.
- In my opinion, Thompson looked good in his only start in the league in a strong away performance at Portsmouth, think he’s warranted more involvement than he’s had and there’s been plenty of opportunities to give him half an hour in games we’ve been cruising. Think he’d at least graft and help provide the energy we were lacking on Saturday in midfield.
- Brown on the bench because he’s someone that isn’t Collins, 8 goals in 8 appearances in the under 18’s premier league this season, 79 minutes per goal, was on the bench against West Ham so clearly he’s at least somewhat on Warne’s radar. Might offer us something different? To be honest I’d rather try Dobbin as a 9 rather than a Collins completely bereft of confidence.
- Midfield I’ve picked definitely has the potential to be overran and easily beaten, and Bird’s very fortunate to be in it based on Saturday, but we need a reaction to the last game and I’d be interested to see what they could offer as a three.

The excuse on radio Derby was that only him or Knight can play the behind the striker role; which really was a massive cop out today by Warne.
Considering Knight played next to Bird and not behind the striker it’s a terrible excuse. Plus Knight’s played on the wing for us a lot of times and at right back earlier this season, it doesn’t have to be one of the other

Mcgoldrick- Good opportunity to rest NML who clearly needs it.
- Roberts and Rooney gives us more energy with the fullbacks.

Knight HourihaneDobbin Sibley Springett
Mcgoldrick- The older players look tired, the attack looks in desperate need of some youth and energy at times.
- Think Sibley and Mcgoldrick could be a real threat together given time. Mcgoldrick needs a rest in one of these next two games because we’re in real danger of injuring him through overplaying like we did with Vydra.
- We need the areal threat of Davies and Forsyth on set pieces and some actual defenders in defence after Saturday.

I suspect we’ll see the same starting XI on Tuesday who will be given the chance to get yesterday out of their system.
I hope not, he did that in the Lincoln game after Wycombe and the first half was dire

I have nothing against Bobby Duncan and hope he makes good progress this season, but I do want to see Jack Stretton get on that pitch and start scoring for us. He's earned his chance based on performances.
Feel like some fans only see ? with players who have come from a big club.
Think they’ll both have a part to play with the squad looking like it is

Jason Knight, option to extend his contract

I think to say he’s played most of the season at full back is slightly disingenuous, of his 25 league starts he’s started 8 at full back, all under Rosenior. He has 3 goals and 3 assists in all competitions. 922 minutes per goal.
In comparison with Louie Sibley, who has started 12 of his 21 league starts at left back or left wing back (plus more in the cups), often coming on at left back too, to my memory Knight’s usually been coming on in midfield if he hasn’t started. All his starts at left back have come under Warne. He has 6 goals and 2 assists in all competitions. 444 minutes per goal.
Not saying one is better than the other, but having played a lot of minutes in the 10 since Christmas, Knight needs to be much more productive. In the one start and a half Sibley has had in that role recently he scored as many as Knight has in the whole time he’s been playing as the 10. I think we give Sibley a run of games as the 10 and you find another position for Knight, whether that be as an 8 in a switch of formation, on the wing, or worst case scenario at right back.
