This seems like the natural successor to The Office for me. I adore the music and the photography is something else.
I might be going a bit overboard here but think it captures Englishness better than anything else I can think of. Combines our history and gentle landscape with our humour and eccentricity.
The Office was the urban side of England. The Detectorists the village.
Ps did you get a little emotional when Lance's song was actually pretty good?

So the utter antithesis of After Life - from Gervais' former sidekick Mackenzie Crook - The Detectorists.
It's a couple of years old now, but I have just discovered it on iPlayer.
A warm, gentle comedy with plenty of heart. A bromance for two middle-aged men talking baalocks in a field as they try to find undiscovered gold.
I found it oddly relatable ?
Give it a try.

After Life S2 was marginally better than S1 because at least the main character wasn't entirely an unsympathetic, one dimensional ******** who's only redeeming features were those that is dead wife told us he had, but were never once shown in any of the modern day scenes or flashback videos in which he appeared to be a completely intolerable Bamford.
None of the flashbacks in S2 particularly painted him in the best light either.
The majority of the series is basically just watching Ricky Gervais pull sad faces, talking glumly and saying the things he thinks bereaved/depressed peopee would say, backed up by some sad music and the occasioanal appearance of a dog.
His character, and the supporting characters all even remark on the fact that his behaviour is all largely for show.
There are some good moments, of course, and sometimes all the manipulative, everyman, TV tricks added up to a degree where an emotional response was unavidable, it was like watching Long Lost Family. I think there was only one time across all of the episodes where Gervais and his character seemed to be genuinely three dimesional and relatable (one of the park bench scenes nearer to the end) but it's since been pointed out just how bloody awful the dialogue was ("It's my job as a woman" or something), so scratch that.
It's a 6/10 series. 5/10 for genuine emotional connectivity, 7/10 for comedy.
The psychiatrist character was the most cringeworth and least funny thing I've seen on TV for years though, a complete characetuer without a shred of the humanity that the rest of the show yearned for but never achieved.

Liked the first series of After Life, struggled to like this series after watching the first 3 episodes.
Just doesn't seem to have had any funny moments bar maybe 1 or 2 lines from the therapist.
Feel like I've missed what the storyline is supposed to be as well.
Best things I've watched recently was series 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm which is up there with some of the best episodes of the entire show and remarkably consistent.

Likeable?...I think that was the point. There was no good/bad.. It was all grey.. Light and dark. The main Japanese cop I actually liked, and his sidekick back in Japan. His Mum was amusing...his wife was brave, loyal but dull..that's life isn't it? I usually find Kelly Mcdonald a little grating too but I warmed to her. The gay character was seriously flawed but still sympathetic at times and amusing.
Flawed people living imperfect lives.
(although as someone pointed out though.. The crime boss's daughter was pretty perfect)

@86 Schmokes & a Pancake I have just finished Giri/Haji.
Really enjoyed it in the main. Weird hybrid of solid BBC drama, Japanese action movie, witty dialogue and arty direction.
Stretched believability at times but the acting, the engaging characters and unusual themes did grab me without truly capturing me. Definitely would recommend it though.

Best recaps in a series ever. Gripping, funny, stylish, sexy, brutal. It had it all.
Don't want to give anything away for those who haven't watched it but how good was the scene on the rooftop. And the reason why the brother was allowed to disappear. So many great characters in there too.

Giri/Haji
Wow. Brilliant stuff. Great depth of characters. It's an excellent study of breaking relationships across generations set against a background of corrupt police and Yakuza gangsters.
Quirky. Stylish. Plenty of action too. If you like Tarantino or enjoyed Killing Eve, you'll probably like this.
On Netflix.

Too right. Thought it was brilliant show. I thought early Tarantino too. Love how the quirky parts creep in as the series progresses, with little sign of it at the beginning. Is the gangster boss's daughter the most attractive women ever too?

Rewatching Freaks and Geeks on amazon prime.
Really good show from 1999 starring James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel.
Only 18 episodes as it got cancelled early but well worth a watch.

I'm late to the party but I've just binge watched Fleabag and it's a masterpiece!
Also Frozen 2 was really good.

With the absence of sport, either live or televised, I've started looking for ways to keep the Memsahib entertained in the evenings and I thought - "I know, proper telly" as opposed to never venturing outside the sports channels. I'd heard that a lot of people we impressed with "Killing Eve" so last night, we fired up iPlayer and gave it a go.
First three episodes of Series 1 - blooming excellent. I really enjoyed it. We will watch a few more tonight.

I think S2 got a little bit cerebral for my liking. I'm all for thought provoking shows that engage the grey matter, but they really tipped the scales last time. Saying that Kiksuya and Vanishing Point were two of the best episodes of television in many a year.
The reviews I've read for those episodes critics have seen are very positive and they've commented that the story is simpler this time, so fingers crossed

not sure you get over it, as much as you just accept it. Sadly they are miles apart.
I let my girl go to sleep in 2009. She still pops up in my dreams, and I still get emotional talking about her. Miss her daily.
Sorry for the less than comforting response, but if you're owt like me, you prefer dogs to humans, you will always miss the dog.
I will add however, funny stories that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, will make you feel better.
I like the one where I took my grandad fishing, and he threw a stick for the dog, she came back with a frisbee shaped cow-pat, that he didn't spot, she dropped it by his feet, he picked it up and somehow it's consistency altered in that split second, and it became like merangue.

Watching Atypical on Netflix. Great feelgood telly. A good smattering of laughs mixed with a nice message. Watch it when you need a pick me up.

Several people strongly recommended it, plus positive reviews on here...
Watched 45mins and turned it off. Thought the whole thing was very hammy and naff. Lots of conversations that were played as 'natural' dialogue but just didn't feel real to me.
Could almost hear the ideas and how they looked written on paper...all felt very heavy handed and clunky to me.
'To show contrast he then calls his wife who is relaxing in a hotel with a glass of wine... Cut to her lying on a bed. "oh yeh baby, are you OK cos its sooo hard being me, just f-ing relaxing here on a bed' (swearing makes it much more edgy). Etc
Not for one second did I forget it was all acting.
Weird how much I disliked it.
