Nick and the flag boys will encourage more young fans to travel eventually. Slowly and surely more and more will want to go for a bit of a laugh and a sing song regardless of how we are playing and what division we are in.

People who should know better (not aimed at anyone on this forum btw), have forgot what its like to be young and passionate about their club.

There is no better feeling than a few beers, singing yer daft head off at an away match, then moaning about how poor we played before planning where to meet for the next away match.

Next time we take 5,000 to Stoke or 7,000 to Blackburn or 8,000 to Barnsley I hope the 279 at Cardiff get free tickets!

Ha Ha!! No pressure hey Uttox! LOL!

Got to be honest we have already recruited a few young fans this season alone and that is great to see. They are coming for like you say a good time and a few beers and its also great to see that they are more interested in the singing, drinking than fighting lark.

The 14-17 year old are the fans we need to target as these are the fans that have ST with Mum / Dad etc and then are old enough to go on their own. Alot will turn there backs as they see PPS as boring (and rightly so!) so alot of hard work to be done.

I will persist though!

I must say that the poor away support confuses me a little bit. I'm 40 and used to go a lot to away games from the late 80's well into the 90's and the support we used to take was really good - I'd go as far as to say we were known for it.. The problem is that you get married and have kids and get a mortgage and all that stuff and you just cant justify clearing off all day to an away match. Hats off to those that get away with it but my lads (who are too young to go)would be pretty unimpressed if I cleared off every other weekend on one of the 2 full days I get with them. As it is, I get to about 3 away games a season. I'm guessing there are loads like me.

What I don't get is where all the 17 to 30 year olds have gone that should have replaced people like me. I think there's something in this point about the constant lack of any excitement/success but, then again that applied at times in the early 90's as well and definitely in the early 80's (when I understand the away following was also very good) and didn't seem to have much effect. Maybe it's the sheer length of time we've been (relatively) unsuccessful, maybe it's the passage of time from the glory years when we were genuinely national news, maybe it's just cost. Whatever, I agree that it's primarily the "yoof" that need attracting.

It is a bit embarrassing though when we're championing sides like Cardiff's support. I was brought up to think of them, Stoke etc as small-time.

Priced out. Not just by ticket prices but train travel, even with a young person's rail card, is often massively expensive (it's costing me £70 for Portsmouth away without beer, food and betting money) for example. For most 17, 18, 19 year olds this is just too much. I'm fortunate that I have reasonably paid job and no responsibilities so can afford to go to a lot of away games.

The price isn't the only reason for a lack of teenagers and young lads. Most of my mates don't want the hassle of having to plan a month or more in advance for an away trip - wait until the day to buy the train and a match ticket and you'll face a hefty price hike from both quarters. Then there's the stewarding and policing which is fairly over the top in a lot of cases and really puts people off. We want to get off the train 3 hours before kick off, have a sing song, have a few beers and just have a laugh - unless you get to the away city 5 hours before kick-off you'll be spotted by the police and palmed off to a pub at best or put straight into the ground, via a 2 hour police escort. Any group of 5 or more lads not in replica shirts and jester hats, aged 18-30 is jumped on within minutes.

Then there's the lack of like minded souls who attend - we want to feel like we're part of a huge gang of mates, not that there's 20 of us and the rest of our away following is made up of tutting flask and blanket types. These days I suppose you've got to factor in the internet, shopping malls, video games and generally I think people are harder to please - 4 hours travelling, 90 minutes of football, 5 pints and a burger and chips maybe doesn't have the same appeal as it once did.

I also think there's a sense that the players don't really represent "us". A lot of them are not even from this country let alone the local area so maybe there's some resentment there - we see them stroll about for 90 minutes, fall over a few times and pocket £10,000 and we're expected to give these guys unyielding support?

It's a vicious circle - there's no atmosphere, the enjoyment isn't there, so no young lads go, so there's still no atmosphere...

Just my thoughts.

We couldn't go for a few reasons - Dav was at work till gone 5 and we wouldn't have had time to get down. It's a school night for the kids (and Dav come to that) and Cardiff is a bit far - plus the cost of it, petrol, food, tickets etc. It isn't always easy for the average family to get to away matches.

Well done to all rams who went though, good on ya's. It sounded like you had a blast despite the result. 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I am one of these youngsters your on about Jobey, i've got to about 8 away games this season. I love going to them and would go to more, but i can't because of prices, Pompey has cost me 40 quid, How many 16 year olds can fork that out all the time?

I was a teenager in the 70's George and the big difference then was work. Most school leavers were straight into paid apprenticeships or work. British Rail was cheap and cheerful and you could decide on the morning of the match whether to go or not - no worries about tickets, just pay at the turnstile.

And we managed to meet up without the use of mobile phones or facebook............

Definately echo the rail price put off. These last 2/3 years it seems to have gone up a hell of a lot, hardly do any away games by train now unfortunately. Still get to about 10-12 aways a season but majority are by car. Thankfully for me I have a missus who likes driving and not so much drinking... Still doesn't beat a day on the lash with the lads though.

I travel by train to most away games and have to say that if you book the tickets well in advance then the price is usually pretty good. Just over £20 to go to Porstmouth (from Stevenage) tomorrow which is cheaper than driving

Unfortunately for me and probably a few others i don't find out if I've got certain weekends free from work until near the weekend itself. Would make things a lot better booking in advance but it just can't be done for me!

Thing is it seems like its shot up massively in just a few years, I used to turn up to the train station ticketless a few years back when I could go every week and had no problems with it price wise. (bar Pompey in the PL!)
