Tyson and Brayford could be back for Bristol City

Why does everyone hate Ben Davies when our next creative player (Jamie Ward) has LESS than HALF the assists? doesn't seem like a reasonable argument to me, we cannot lose Ben Davies from the team, he has 7 assists to Wards 3, Robinsons 2 and Green and O'Briens 1 (according to FL OS) last season Green was our highest assist player through-out the season with 8, closest to him was Cywka with 5, the year before was Commons with 6 and closest to him was Teale with 4 and the year before that Teale got 8 and Commons 9 respectively going back before that.. in our promotion season, our most creative players was depressively Howard with 6, and years before that (as much as I can research) Tommy Smith with 6, Inigo Idiakez with 12, and unbelievably before that most creative player was Candido Costa with 3 and the first season we spent in the championship it was Kinkladze with 7 assists...

so before you judge him, remember come the summer he could be well our most creative player of the last 10 years, possibly longer!

But how many of those assists have come in the last 7 or 8 games?

Let's face it, he hasn't performed well as of late.

On Sunday I watched a player from AFC Totton put in one corner, it found the head of a striker and was put into the net. He may hit the right areas with his corners but let's be honest, he hasn't hit the head of Shackell, Barker or Hendrick in a while.

He struggles to beat a man when he has the ball on his wing. He relies on Brayford making sharp runs off him to free up space but without Brayford there he can't seem to find a way past a defender.

I personally rate chances created over assists as an assist could be laying a ball on for a longrange shot like SDavies v Brum and Watford.

Ben Davies doesn't really offer much in open play apart from ball striking and his crosses and set plays have been poor of late.

I'd still argue till I'm blue in the face you take Ben Davies out the team, you need to replace him with someone who is going to contribute the same amount otherwise you're shooting yourself in the foot, in this case for what Ben Davies lacks in exciting runs he makes up in getting the ball into dangerous positions, how can he take the flack for the inept bunch of fools that are struggling to take advantage, in the last home game he put a ball into the box which literally bounced in the middle of the goal 6 yards out, any striker or player worth his salt should be smashing them in with every ounce of power he has in him.

sometimes you have players that work in pairs, and in general play Ben Davies misses Steve Davies to link up with and lets be honest the whole team does!

But he is out of form, and how many of his assists came from open play ?

IMO we have struggled of late because teams have sussed that Ward is the only/most threat when he has the ball, and is often doubled up on, whereas Davies from open play is giving very little at the moment, hence why he has been subbed in the past couple of games.

I don't put too much faith in stats. Davies has a few assists but he does take nearly all set pieces.

Same with strikers. If we signed a striker that has scored 12 goals last season it'd sound alright but what if 7 of them came from penalties?

I think Davies is alright. But hasn't got enough of anything we need. Good to have on the bench though.

I think the problem with Ben Davies at the moment is that he knows his form has dipped. I say this because he appears to be constantly playing for free kicks. I see him attempting to beat a player lose control he then grabs at the body of the defender and throws himself on the floor looking for a free kick. I think he does this as he knows he is losing the ball on one v one situations and tries to hide it. He was not doing this before the November run and he needs to try and get out of this habit. When he is on the floor not winning a freekick we are a player down and less affective. Keep on your feet Ben and beat your man or put a good early ball in to the danger area and the confidence will come back.

I think the people who maybe dont like Ben Davies actually watch the match and dont just read stats. An assist can be passing the ball 3 yards to a team mate who then beats 10 men and smacks it in from 30 yards. He isnt a threat, his set pieces are ok but the most effective crosses at any level come from the bye line and he never gets there. It would be great if we had a winger both sides and not all on ward.

Don't mean to sound flippant here Alpha, but the last time I looked, a goal was still a goal whether it's a penalty or not.

An assist is still an assist if it leads directly to a goal.

I don't really mind how they come about.

Agree that ben davies is out of form - but no-one can dent he carries a threat even when not playing well.

A threat is still a threat ;-)

I disagree last 5 or 6 games he has carried no threat at all. Clough signed him as a 'set piece specialist' he has not even come close to scoring a free kick this season, and the only goal i can remember from one of his corners was shackell against birmingham. Specialist my ar$e.

he's put at least 3 balls a game into areas we should be attacking, That could be another 18 assists and the whole world would be creaming themselves over ben Davies right foot. You included.

He can only play the ball, he can't make the runs for them as well.

He's alright is Ben Davies. Let's not start looking for another scapegoat. All we need is a clean sheet and a couple of forwards back and we'll be off again. There's really not that much wrong.

Would much rather see lee croft playing than Ben davies but he has vanished again. Is he filming a new toy story or something??

No please, Lee Croft has to be one the least talented "footballers" I have seen, all he does is restrict Brayford. At least Ben Davies is decent at ball striking in form.
