Day
Just seen that if the sentence is under 24 months it's suspended so he's not off inside

Well where you have a justice system that has only the black and white aspect of "send them to prison or there's no deterrent" you're going to both get people who get off light and people who get far too harsh a punishment for the crime committed. If Messi was the type of person who committed multiple crimes or wanted to continue committing fraud he would now have a tricky near 2 years while he was under probation (many of them do commit something else in the time and then go to prison under circumstances that are on the whole more deserving of it), the fact that he's not a criminal of that ilk means he should go to prison, immediately? "You're better (in a sense, I'd rather not get into a philosophical debate on good/bad) than the people this system was designed for, so we should treat you more harshly." Sith Happens
Messi will be fine, his value as a player will see to that. If this was a lower value player then the chances are his contract would be ended due to his criminal conviction - but with messi there is too much at stake value wise. He should at least have to do community service for it. If this had been the normal man in the street say to the tune of a few thousand then you can bet the sentence would have been harsher. Dimmu
Surprised how the sentence somehow happened to be under 24 months.

My assumption would be that as the crime was commited between 2007 and 2009 it wasnt actually just once the fraud occured, it must have actually been multiple times - and had he not been caught, he may well still have been comitting the crime. Bris Vegas
Similar case to Mascherano. Nobody will know the truth but those involved, but I honestly can't see a footballer being smart enough to create tax havens in Belize or Uruguay just to save a fraction of what he earns. He probably has a team around him who said they knew of a way to save his earnings, and he just went along with it. Quite surprised he has been sentenced though, considering so many famous people have done similar. Also, he and his father paid back everything which was owed and more. Haven't people like Gabby Logan and Gary Barlow done the same? Didn't hear of any sentencing on them.

Kernow
I don't think there would be any real danger of someone of Messi's stature going to prison for something like tax invasion. There would always be a loophole that he would conveniently be able to use to get out of it. If it was for something serious such as what Adam Johnson did, there wouldn't be much that could prevent it. But Messi was never going to end up behind bars for tax evasion. Just the way the world works.

I think what messi did was illegal, what Barlow did was a legal tax loophole, you can't be convicted for doing something which is just morally wrong. Whether he understood or not, if he signed to say do it he is still to blame. Its the same as nick Blackmans case...you cannot use intelligence or lack of it as an excuse.
