So when and who decided that if we went far enough we didn't fall in to the abyss

Pythagoras, Plato, Eudoxus and many other Greek scholars, 2500 odd years ago.

Eratosthenes calculated its circumference 2200 years ago and got it right to within 1%

they only theorised

Given the angle of inclination of the sun at noon at two given points on the same longitudinal plane on a sphere, and given the distance between the two points, anyone with a basic knowledge of Pythagorean geometry can calculate the circumference of the sphere.

You don't have to walk in one direction with a pedometer and wait until you've gone all the way around and reached your start point.

Similarly, if you wanted to build a fence all the way around the earth at the equator, and the fence was 1 metre high, it's easy to calculate how much longer the rail at the top would be compared to the distance at the ground. The answer, to many, is surprising.

So was it a goal or not?

We need something to divide us after all this nicey-nicey stuff.

Us who believe it was in can be called "blindfaithers" while those who think it never crossed the line will be known as "wrong".

But we're right, no goal was given.

But we're right, no goal was given.

To be fair to the lino, with it being right in the middle of the goal, it was as far away from the refence points like the gaol line, the post and the bar as possible.

But looking at where the guy was standing, he didnt clear it off the line, he cleared it from 2 feet behind the line. He was not streching forward , he was trying to hook it back from behind the goal line.Maybe we need crickets "hotspot" thermal imaging technology to detect where and when the ball hit the player , then it would put it beyond doubt but certainly looked like a goal both live and in the freeze frames.

I pasted the image into Photoshop, drew a straight line between the back of the goal line and cross bar. It was a goal. That was based on the frame in which he has already made contact with the ball and it has begun to make it's way back. At the match it was a clear 2 foot over the line.

Having consulted Hawkeye I can confirm it is a goal.

Hi-tech has at last arrived to England!

And boy, it was worth waiting for.

I would love to see replay of it with big R flashing in top right corner...
