Real Ale/Lager for a Coeliac?

How do?

I thought I'd ask this here seeing as there's one or two folk who know their beers and I might get a tip off about something that I'm otherwise oblivious to.

I've been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. For those who've no idea what that is, it's essentially like a general gluten allergy, but instead of being allergic to it, your stomach attacks it. That's a very simple explanation anyway.

Now, while it's going to be a huge pain in the backside, one of the main things it does is automatically rule out all general lagers, and most real ales. I hoping though that one of you guys, particularly those of you who know your ales, might have family or friends with Coeliac and know of a decent beer I can turn my attention to?

There are one or two real ale's that I already know I can have, Heanor Pale Ale I think I can have for one, though that's not going to be much use unless I'm in Heanor itself. Rapture is another, though I'm not quite as keen, despite the kick arse name.

So does anyone have any ideas? I've tried one Coeliac specific lager but it tasted like sour, fizzy apple juice. Not quite the taste I'm looking for. I can have most spirits thanks to the distillery process, and wine/cider are both ok, though I like neither of those unfortunately. Any help is appreciated, hopefully someone has run into something drinkable that they can pass on the name of.

How come them ales are ok?

Estrella make a beer Duna or summart? Not cheap though.

Jack Daniels is ok

Must be the way they're brewed, some ales are brewed in a way that'll mean I can drink them.

Jack Daniels is bloody lovely, but expensive. Need something I can just drop in the pub and have a pint of, I suspect I'll be broke within months if I have to resort to whiskey.

My cousin found this website really useful, just grab what you can off it for 6 months (its part funded by the NHS so thats why its free for 6 months)

Thanks chap, I've got that site bookmarked and it's handy when stuff's free like that but I'ma need something eventually that I can drink at the pub with friends etc for good if I can, was hoping I'd luck into someone knowing a common real ale that happens to be Coeliac friendly.

Suck it in Nancy, drink cider, you'll get used to it. It's what I do.

Lets face it, if you really think about it, does any beer really taste nice? It's all in the head, we're brain washed into thinking we should like beer as we are men.

Discuss.

Sacrilege!

I didn't used to like beer because I'd only had the ***** they serve in the majority of pubs to go on, or people would buy cans of **** mainstream lagers that I'd try and find unpleasant. Same goes for ciders in pubs - I'd be drinking flavoured ciders because they were at least passable, and the occasional spirit & mixer.

Started buying bottled beers that sounded interesting in the description, found a few favourites that I genuinely like the taste of so stuck to them. Nothing to do with an appearance of' manliness', just the taste.

If I'd have been brainwashed into liking beer because I'm male, then surely I'd just drink Carling or somesuch horror?

Now there's the whole 'craft beer revolution' stuff going on and I've become some what of a beer aficionado, got the weight gain to prove it

Cheers Rezner, I'll definitely save the link, but much like Boycie says, the specialist beers are so expensive! Though I suppose if you're brewing a beer that's only really applicable to 1% of the population, you're going to have to charge a fair bit.

Boycie, Cider is a no go. I've tried to like it for years, and I have failed in that mission. If I'm forced to chug down Strongbow and its ilk for the rest of time I'll not be best pleased.
