Too many cooks tend to make a dog's breakfast.

It's a pretty daft idea to set the structure before the new manager is appointed imo. It further restricts our choice - at present we appear to be looking for a manager/head coach who is willing to work with tiny budget, take the flak for the tiny budget, be a yeas man, have no control over transfers and get us promoted. So surely we can't expect to attract anyone who is not stupid or desperate...hello Mr McClaren.

and for DoF, well Mark Arthur is available

Yeah Franco Baldini at Spurs. AVB likes that structure and Baldini has been pretty key in getting the likes of Saldado, Eriksen, Lamela, Paulhino. Used the Bale money very wisely.

If both coach and DoF know how the setup works and can work together then it's a good setup. A lot of 'managers' these days just want to work with the style of play, etc. get a list of positions they want to fill and the DoF get the best players available for that role. Both of them need to agree with the style of play. No use having a head coach who likes to play passing possession football and a DoF who wants to sight big physical lumps who are bruisers and can't pass.

That's why the DoF role is important and I imagine if it is McClaren the structure has been explained and he is ok working in that setup. He may even have a hand in who the DoF is.
