Everton have provoked a backlash from fans after revealing a new club crest.

The updated design no longer features the club motto 'nil satis nisi optimum' - meaning 'Nothing but the best is good enough' - that has been present since 1991.

Goodison Park chiefs said the new version formed "a concise, modern and dynamic representation of Everton", and was produced after consulation with various stakeholders, including fans.

But there was widespread criticism on social media and an online petition garnered more than 6,000 signatures within hours of the crest being unveiled.

A statement on the Everton website, attempting to explain the re-design, said: "The previous version of the crest - created 13 years ago - was often misrepresented, suffering regularly from the omission of key elements like our name and our year of formation.

"As technology marches on, those challenges have increased. On television, on websites, on mobile devices, the crest was far too often badly reproduced.

"Our team carries a responsibility to maintain a refreshed and relevant identity for the club. We recognised the need to do this with diligence and sensitivity - with one eye on the past but also one eye on the future.

"We researched our history, we reviewed the evolution of our crest and we benchmarked against other major sporting brands.

"Created following an extensive consultation process with fans, supporters' groups and branding experts, our new club crest combines four historic elements of the outgoing crest - the tower, the shield, our name and the year of our formation - to form a concise, modern and dynamic representation of Everton."

The club added: "The name Everton and the 1878 date have been incorporated into the shield which does not feature the Latin motto.

"Although 'Nil Satis Nisi Optimum' is not included in this new design, it will still have a high-profile presence throughout the club, and a new range of retail products are being introduced."

Can't get a picture of cus I'm on my phone.

It looks a lot worse than their old one I didn't see any need for change. A lot of clubs have changed their crest recently and not for the better. Why?

.....if they were going to update it then perhaps a car on bricks with the wheels missing would have been more contemporary.

Everton have apologised to fans who were incensed over the club's decision to launch a new modernised crest.

More than 16,000 fans signed an online petition in protest at the new crest, which removed their Latin 'Nil Satis Nisi Optimum' motto which translates as "nothing but the best is good enough".

A statement on the club's website, titled 'a regrettable Bank Holiday weekend' went on to reveal that major discussions had taken place since the announcement, and their decision to back-track started with a lengthy apology to supporters.

Although the changed crest will be in use on their kits in 2013-14, Everton will involve fans on a panel to decide on a further new design for following seasons.

Everton CEO Robert Elstone said: "Clearly the weekend's response has meant that we have reviewed how we went about the whole of the re-design process and whilst many objectives were achieved, we recognised we missed the key part out.

"Our chairman had demanded widespread consultation and we stopped short of that. We talked to our fans' forum, our commercial partners and our experienced staff around the club. That was not enough.

"We want to put this right. Whilst the time-constraints of kit suppliers in particular present challenges, which inevitably means the version released on Saturday will be in operation for the 2013/14 season, we are determined to give our fans a greater say in how we represent the club on our jerseys, at Goodison Park and across media around the world.

"In advance of the 2014/15 campaign, we are turning to you to help us shape and refine the badge we'll adopt in the future. Evertonians from all sections of the fan-base will be pulled together in a fully transparent way.

"This group will conduct an in-depth review of all aspects of past and present club crests. The panel will then develop ideas and put forward suggestions to you. Evertonians will make the final decision.

"We have worked hard over recent years to give our fans a greater sense of involvement in the club and dialogue flows openly and freely in many areas from the fans' forum, to supporters' clubs and of course, via Everton in the Community. We will ensure the same happens with the future development of your club crest."

The 1991 designs onwards include a symbol of the 'tower' in which the fence at the base has been misinterpreted as a stairway winding its way up around a mythical double storey tower.

They didn't seem to understand what they were drawing.

Anyway.......weather's **** isn't it?
