I'm not sure Mac would be doing any better with the squad to be honest. We may be playing better football, but the squad is so small, especially with the injuries that the team wouldn't be much different.
    We're forced into playing 4231:
    GK
    Byrne   Wisdom   Mengi   LB
    CM   CM
    RW   AM   LW
    Kazim
Choice in goal is a toss of a coin - Roos vs Marshall
Likewise at LB - Buchanan vs Forsyth
CM is any two from Bird, Knight and Shinnie
The three behind Kazim is out of Lawrence, Jozwiak, Sibley and Roberts
Even Kazim and Lawrence don't appear to be 100% fit at the moment. For Mac-ball to work he needs the players to be fully fit, with top options off the bench. We just don't have that right now.

In some ways those jobs are actually easier. There not expected to win every week, and it doesn't really matter the style of play they use either.

That's just kind of proved my point of it being more the managers tactics to blame than the players.
plus compromising goals to concede less is one thing, but 30 goals in 41 games is pathetic. There's many teams in this division who set up more defensively than us and score more.

You could argue the defensive setup of the team has helped in keeping the goals against tally down. A direct consequence of that would be fewer goal in the goals scored column.

So half the team would be better then.
They are currently not scoring or creating, so the 'cost' i don't understand.

A rescue job with half the games left wouldn't be Mac's thing, we'd probably be slightly better off than now, but only just.
Billy on the other hand, would have had us pushing hard for the play offs.

    More likely....
Everyone would be up in arms on here because he had not come out and been around to everyones house and told each and every fan in person that he was not interested in the Newcastle job if Bruce is sacked.

I'm not sure which of my points your saying isn't the case...
We've conceded 46 goals this season which is about average in this division, and only scored 30 which is terrible. Does that not suggest that the defenders are performing decently and the attackers are underperforming?
I'd argue that Lawrence and Jozwiak often run nowhere because of lack of any sophisticated tactical game play in the attacking third, by which I mean detailed tactics which are way beyond me and most fans knowledge, such as runs off the ball by supporting players, movement etc. Good coaches know these things. While I agree there shooting has been off, most of there shots have been from outside the area. I'm also not sure I've seen many occasions where there's been a "well placed colleague". Surely you have to agree that we have some talented players who are capable of more?

Yes it's not necessarily a management thing, but I'd say it's quite a large part of what coaches do. I'm mainly disagreeing with some people who are putting 100% of the blame on the players.
It's quite obvious watching the team that we're not playing in a very sophisticated way, which you could say is the only we can with the quality we have, but I'd say we have the quality to at least play some decent football. Good managers obviously know many intricate tactics to create chances and score, I just don't think any of our coaches have that knowledge, probably because they're all inexperienced. I believe there are many good managers out there that could get good performances out of a team that had a 3 of Lawrence, Sibley and Jozwiak behind a striker.

That's just the easy conclusion. They've shown in the past they are at least decent Championship players, as for Lawrence and Jozwiak you can't deny they have the ability. Is it just a coincidence that almost all our attacking players are underperforming but almost all our Defenders aren't? I has nothing to do with the style of play and tactics what so ever?

Change the question to "What would have McClaren done with this team?"
Does anyone actually think we'd be worse off if we had just hired Mac as manager instead of Rooney? I don't.
He probably would have been cheaper and only signed until the end of season unlike Wayne's 2 year deal, we had an instant boost the last 2 times he first joined which I think would have been enough to avoid relegation.
The only reason we probably went for Rooney was either because Mel didn't want to pay Rooney's playing contract any longer, or Mel had too much pride to hire Mac for a third time.
What is Mac even doing at the moment? The current terrible playing style suggests he's having little involvement with tactics.

2 of those are full international players so it does seem to me to be a lazy analysis to just dismiss the players as not being good enough.

McClaren had his time....twice over, its time to move on.
Wazza is the manager, he is the best man for the job and he is doing and will continue to do great.

DoF responsible for transfers but not tactics:  Clough Jr. or Cocu
First Team coach responsible for selection and tactics: McClaren

He'd of got us scoring, that I honestly believe.
We'd be winning but the scorelines would be back to crickets figures with this team, both scoring and conceding.
I'd take that in a heartbeat tho.
Sibbers would be in double figures by now!!
