I don't know, there's more to a team than it being the sum of its parts. We have the more gifted individuals, but do they/can they play as a team? You may argue, and quite rightly, that they appeared to do so when Bielik was in the side. We have got some of our better results against the better sides. Rotherham haven't beaten a side ranked 10th or higher. Yet they have beaten the sides in/around them when it mattered including a double over us.
Your comment skirts dangerously close to complacency. There are plenty of sides who remain in divisions as opposed to sides with better players/bigger budgets, precisely because they function as a team. It was a miracle that Wycombe got promoted in the first instance as they already possessed one of the lowest budgets in L1.
There's a view that we are one of the biggest underachievers in the division alongside Forest and the likes of Blackburn. I actually think our squad and players are not as good as we think they are or some of them think themselves to be. Some are carrying injuries (Wisdom), others are talented & young but inconsistent, we have scored 31 goals, the lowest in the division. That is a combination of a lack of creativity (the amount of chances created) and clinical finishing. We have failed to score in 20/42 games (48%). Bielik perhaps was the only midfielder able to offer a different outlet, switching the play.
Apart from the top six, most sides in this division are evenly matched. The fact is that we haven't performed against sides in/around us at times and the points dropped against the likes of Coventry may come to haunt us. We haven't been always professional when it was required or ensured we at least left with a point.
Rooney has been a big disappointment in how he has managed this side over the past couple of months, but I don't think anybody else would have extracted a whole lot more out of this squad - and I include Paul Cook who I wanted as manager. He's struggled to turn Ipswich around, 2W in 11 and failing to score in 5 of the last 6. They are one of the lowest scorers in L1 & Cook tends to have a reputation as a manager who likes to play attacking football.
I think others described Rooney's impact well @Rammy03. Rooney got us to be more solid and nick wins. But once this gave way, and CKR became less effective (injury), the old problem of lack of goals came back to haunt us. Six in 10 games tells it own story.

Only partly, If you put me as manager of Real Madrid I'd probably get terrible results and get them relegated, but you'd still say there players were good.

1st team isn’t really a good comparison as it’s a squad game these days. Look how often we’ve chopped and changed our lineups.
All the players I’ve mentioned would get into the others teams squads in varying guises, they couldn’t all be plonked into one team. Most would make the starting lineups.

Who’d have thought Mason Bennett, George Evans and Scott Malone would be key players at a top 10 side yet not good enough for us?
Waghorn was Ipswich’s leading scorer with 16 goals, Bird, Knight and Sibley have all attracted the attention of Prem clubs, Joz looks good on the international stage, Byrne is a very solid Champ RB, Marshall a solid Champ keeper, Lawrence can be one of the better players in the division when his heads right.
At different clubs with different managers these players could thrive.

I'd argue that they've not been good the last 2 seasons because the managers have been rubbish.
It's not perceived ability, they've proven they can perform steadily at the top end of the table. Lawrence got 9 goals, 11 assists for Ipswich. Waghorn got 16 goals 13 assists also for Ipswich.
I honestly think if you put Lawrence in Brentford's team he'd be one of the best players in the league.

    In terms of ability only,
I'd say Preston, Millwall and Birmingham have a similar or slightly better squad but we certainly have a better squad than Luton, Coventry and Rotherham. Most there squads are still League 1 level. Obviously we'd take any of there strikers at the moment as ours are injured, but that's only happened recently.
Coventry - I'd only take Hamer and Ostigard
Luton - Bradley and maybe Tom Ince
Rotherham - maybe an attacking mid like Wing
people are slating the player's for underperforming, which they have, but they've not underperformed because of lack of ability as Rooney has said himself many times. People are constantly saying how terrible the players are on here, but I can guarantee most clubs would love to have some players with the quality of some of ours in there team. Clarke would get into most teams at the top of the division. Sibley and Knight have been linked with Prem teams. Jozwiak and Lawrence are international players with undoubted ability, I don't think Lawrence has ever been used correctly since he's been at Derby. Even a player like Waghorn, who's been bad all season, has proven he can play at this level.

Hungary are a good side and were very competitive at the last Euro's. They have very good players:
GK- Gulacsi, plays for RB Leipzig, Champions League standard
    CB- Orban, also RB Leipzig
    CB- Szalai, Fenerbahce
    ST- Sallai, Bundesliga, Freiburg
    ST- Szalai, Bundesliga, Mainz
Those are a few, can't be bothered looking through the whole squad. But i think you'll find they are way above EFL league one standard.
Agree with you that if your a good player you should be able to show it no matter the management, but unfortunately that's not how football works nowadays.
i don't know what else to say, the squad is absolutely good enough to stay a championship side. Who is it specifically you think is not good enough at this level?

Beilik if fit, Shinnie, Clarke, Marshall, Byrne, Knight, Bird, Sibley, Lawrence, Roberts, Joz, waghorn, Gregory could all make the match day squads of the above clubs in various guises.

Add Cov, Preston, Millwall, Luton and Birmingham all have similar or lesser standard squads. Yet are above us in the table.

Considering Rotherham seem to be our main rivals this season, how many of there players would you actually put in our team? 1 or 2 if that? There squads so bad they were even happy to take Jozefzoon of us.
Does this not suggest that we should at least be above Rotherham's level? does this not suggest that either the players aren't playing to there ability? or (more likely in my opinion) the coaches aren't getting the best out of them?

yes but Wigan were relegated because they had a poor start to the season and played too defensive. Paul Cook changed things and went more attacking and they were one of the best in the league 2nd half of the season. Therefore proving Byrne is capable of being a top end championship player.
Your point about Jozwiak is wrong. We're talking about Poland not San Marino they are at opposite ends of the scale. Your saying he's only done well for Poland against weak teams, then what about his game against Holland. Also got a goal, assist, and heavily involved in another goal against Hungary who are a very competitive side. He may not have shown his full potential for Derby yet but he has for Poland this year which means our management is failing to get it out of him.

Even without Bielik our squad is better than Rotherham's. So why are Rotherham at the same level as us with a worse team?

If your referring to Byrne, then yes he did get relegated from this division last season, but so did Robinson their other full back who is now in the premier league. Also Byrne was part of that team that only lost 2 of their final 18 games so has proven he is good enough for this division.
And so players like Lawrence & Waghorn who have proven previously to be top 6 championship players, suddenly just become league one standard do they?
Jozwiak as well, a proven international player, suddenly just becomes league 1 standard when he joins us ??
I'm not saying the squad is good enough for promotion, but it is certainly better than where we are.
