  1. If Brighton thought Cashin was first-team material he'd have gone the same route as many, like Kaoru Mitoma, Deniz Undav and Kacper Kozlowski to Union Saint-Gilloise (their sister club in Belgium), or Moisés Caicedo did at Beerschot. Steven Alzate went to Standard Liege. Kjell Scherpen went to the Austrian Bundesliga. They have so many players being developed and it is tremendously successful. Matt Clarke was one of a few they never bothered with. It was the same with Haydon Roberts and Aaron Connolly.

When the rumour went around that Yves Bissouma was going to be sold after his night club incident – he was the best midfielder in the league at that time – I was told they were not worried if he went, because they knew they had a much better player in Caidedo performing wonders in the Belgium league. It was similar with manager Potter, they were happy he left them, and they had a replacement already scouted and were delighted he joined Chelsea.

Brighton are massively in debt, they owe their owner nearly three quarters of a billion, but he is not worried, he is a professional gambler and his wealth increases each year. All I was told when I asked why the deal did not happen is that a fee was never agreed. The fault, it may be at their end, or at our end. I doubt it would be Cashin's demands.

So was Waghorn irritated with the people who were muttering and asking where Wayne was....or annoyed with Wayne because he'd been chatting to him the night before and then he just didn't bother to show up?

You'll have to buy the book. It's available for pre-order on Amazon. Makes a great Christmas present.

    Some last words from Max:

‘I’ll never have anything but nice things to say about Phillip and his staff. They looked after me when I lost my best friend and then broke my leg in the space of about three weeks and I was in a really bad mental space – they would always look out for me.’

  3. There's a new book coming out in October about the Rams' last few seasons Pride Before the Fall). A nice mention of Waggy:

Underpinning some of Cocu’s demise was the presence of Rooney. Talk of Cocu not particularly wanting Rooney at the club and the signing being thrust upon him was doing the rounds amid the squad in earnest. Rooney had been brought in as a player-coach, but did little in the way of coaching outside of sitting in on video sessions and passing on some advice to several players.

‘If he liked you, he’d offer you advice,’ Max Lowe remarked. ‘[Max] Bird, [Jason] Knight – they were his boys. I think he saw some of himself in them. He liked them. Waggy [Martyn Waghorn], too. But for some of the lads it was a bit hard to integrate with Wayne. Obviously we were at a different level from where he’d come from. I think it was hard to find a bit of common ground with him sometimes.’

Whispers had also spread through the squad that Rooney had a clause in his contract that he was going to be the next manager – something which created somewhat of an uneasy tension within the changing room.

‘Sometimes you didn’t feel like you were just playing with Wayne the player. You felt like it was an audition to see if the next manager wanted you there,’ said Lowe.

‘You’d come in on a Monday and we’d break out into our warm-ups and people would ask where Wayne was,’ Lowe said. ‘I think Waghorn would get a bit annoyed especially as he and Wayne would play on the PlayStation together and stuff – they were pretty close – then Wayne wouldn’t show the next day.

‘We never got told if it was a day off or if he was injured or excused for personal reasons. None of that. He just wasn’t there. Then obviously he’d come straight into the team at the weekend and it meant guys like Duane, or Graeme [Shinnie], or Knight, or [Krystian] Bielik had to drop out of the team.’

Ian Storey-Moore didn't change his mind. Derby and Moore had signed the forms and the red s**** changed their minds and refused to let him sign for the Rams.

Still waiting for someone at Forest to sign the transfer form. Ian and Stu have:

From Give It To Moore – He Will Score:

‘Come on then, Ian, let’s start talking. We need you. We want you. I’ll get you back in the England team. But we’ve got to ask you a few questions about your personal life. Right, are you a boozer?’

‘Not really, Mr Clough. I drink with the players but only a glass of wine or half a pint.’

    ‘Are you a womaniser?’

‘No, I’m married now, Mr Clough. When I was younger, absolutely, I was chasing the girls like anyone else.’

    ‘Are you a gambler?’

‘No, not really, the odd flutter now and again but I wouldn’t say I’m a gambler.’

    ‘Do you smoke?’

‘No, I’ve never smoked, Mr Clough.’

Clough turned to Taylor, ‘Peter, we can’t f****** sign him, he’s a f****** liar!’

Then Clough looked back at Moore, ‘Right, come on then, son, how much do you want?’

Moore was on his own, no agent, no advisers: he had to think on his feet. He decided to see if Clough would match the terms O’Farrell, through his journalist friend, had ‘offered’ but reneged upon.

    ‘£200 a week, Mr Clough.’

‘£200 a week? Roy McFarland’s not on that.’

‘I know that, Mr Clough, but I can guarantee you 20 goals a season.’

‘Listen son, if I want a f****** guarantee, I’ll buy a f****** washing machine.’ And after a pause, ‘Don’t worry, son, I’m only kidding!’

  5. Tim Ward and Breedon Books set up the Derby County Former Players' Association long ago. Here are some images of players only a few will remember, at the Donington Thistle Hotel I think it was, the first sponsored dinner held. Since then (1991) they have raised many thousands for charity. I don't think Ikechi Anya ever got an invite. Tim's son, Andrew, wrote The Derby County Story, which was launched that evening. Breedon's Anton Rippon is behind Tommy Powell, dad of Steve Powell. I have more images that I need to dig out and share.

I know him well and for many seasons said he was the type of player we needed to stitching the midfield together, keeping the ball moving but I don't think he's the player he was or what we need now.

You listed some players, all of who I knew, but missed an important fact. They all replaced older players who had left the club. Selling Bird and replacing him with Woods seems to me to be the wrong thing to do.

If you put your financial hat on, though, that Bird has said he is interested joining Hull, that in 12 months we'd get no fee, it would make more sense. Especially if Woods, having been told he can leave 12 months into a three-year contract will drop down a division. He could have the same influence as McGoldrick did, but could also be another Blackman. Right now, if Bird goes, the two players I seen suggested, Tom Davies or Ryan Woods would be a great fit, on paper.

Times have changed. Back in late 90s and early 00s I would know every single player from every single premier league club, thanks to sticker albums, match of the day, football focus,;football italia on TV...etc etc.

Now I'm ashamed to say, j would struggle to name more than 10 players who play for England and 10 is pushing it. If it isn't derby I ain't interested any more.

So, if there was a thread on here saying we are signing strikers Chuba Akpom from Boro, Viktor Gyökeres from Coventry and Carlton Morris from Luton, you'd have to look them up? Or if Levi Colwill got called into to the England squad, you'd have to Wiki him?

  8. I'm sorry, but am I the only one that finds it amazing that many here have no football knowledge at all? Who's Sonny Bradley, never heard of him I've read. Curtis Nelson where does he play? This Conor Washington we've signed, is he any good? Ryan Woods – you couldn't miss him with his ginger hair and should know that Brentford paid a million for him from Shrewsbury when they got promoted into the Championship, he'll have played 20 times against Derby. The younger here, I thought they lived their life playing Football Manager and knew every footballer in the world.

With all due respect, you’re reading a website that is wildly inaccurate. The wage bill by companies house data was in excess £20m in 21/22. It’s the same website that had Hayden Roberts’ wage down as £38k a week last year. Consider Forest reported wages from their promotion year using the same website - £22.4m per annum - companies house data has it at £58.5m. If you’re even looking to use it as a reference point, in that instance it was 260% out.

Tina Anjorin, the poor sod, seems to have been subject to the same nonsense as Hayden Roberts. He signed his deal at 18 years old, why on god’s green earth would Chelsea pay him £27k a week - he hadn’t even properly broke into their U21(U23) side at that point.

I think their failure as a website is to cover every team even though the information is not always there. That they guess at some clubs/players to make it a complete and comprehensive list, when it actually isn't and can never be. I remember Blackburn Rovers was similar to the Forest figures a few seasons back, their published accounts showed a total wage bill of £41m as against this website guessing it was £19m.

Tina Anjorin did sign a five-year contract at Chelsea recently, he's considered one of the most talented youngsters in Europe. He will be on a decent wage to get him to sign that deal, and made his UEFA Champions League debut in 2020.

According to their fans, he's their highest earner on £20k+ a week - £20k a week is £1m per annum - so it would be north of that. I have seen £25k, 30k... They have £20m wage budget based on their 21/22 figures.

£8,100 (£421,200) I was told. Their highest paid players are Faustino Anjorin at £27,000 and Matthew Lowton at £24,000, then the rest are all in single figures. Duane Holmes £6,400.

The problem is (problem being my opinion) I feel Collins/Washington/Rhodes are a similar mold. I would of liked a different option and someone who can frighten defenders with pace behind when a target man isn't working. However, the flip side to this is hoping 1 of the youngsters can make the the step up and give us that injection of pace, I don't know.

I would not consider Washington and Collins to be similar, but I can certainly see them developing a partnership. I'm hoping the team and the style of play that Warne is planning is one that wins matches. Some tinkering, yes, but built around this squad he has assembled, with his preferred wing-backs and lots more shots from outside the area. I don't think Manchester City would want a speedy Vardy signing just in case Haaland is ineffective, similarly with Kane at Spurs etc.

If there was a noticeable weakness last season it was the inability to convert hundreds of corners and free-kicks in the opposition box. The delivery was always excellent, but the threat was rare. Cashin, Bradley and Nelson will be a different proposition and Washington and Collins [and Rhodes] can feed off any knockdowns, that is their strength. I am wishing for an extra 15 goals to come via that this season and the front two players to deliver 30 goals collectively, whatever the combination.

  12. Shouldn't we all be thinking of Rhodes as being another McGoldrick? The similarities are there for many to see, yet mostly, the negatives are his scoring record is not what it used to be (if it was we'd need to find £5m), his hair is thinning and he can't run the 100m in under 11 seconds? A rotation of Collins, Washington and Rhodes, with a little bit of Dajourne Brown, maybe some Sibley and Barkhuizen thrown in, looks okay to me for building a squad to get us out of this division. At least most have heard of him, know what a excellent career he has had, and didn't have to look him up on Wiki.

  13. He was one of Coventry's lowest earners I am told, at less than £4,000 a week, so his salary is unlikely to be a sticking point. When you consider James Collins is 6ft 2in, Conor Washington 5ft 10", Matty is 5ft 9". This theory of signing a tall centre-forward is reducing with each player we are linked with!

  14. Up to £1.75m the Bristol sports reporter says. When you add it all up, the fee just about covers his wages for his time and development at our club. Cashin, Sibley, Thompson and Bird must surely be next to be off elsewhere. Maybe gamble on them to be hot property in January if the manager/owner have a poker face, but I'm doubting that.

  15. Makes sense to me. A current Welsh international with experience. James Collins will know him, as will Curtis Nelson. Also, Ryan Allsop can put in a good word about the training facilities and area. Playing with two wing-backs, a quick one and a tall one alongside Collins ticks the boxes. Downside, he will probably demand a loan move to play at a higher level for his international aspirations!

Steve Mac committed to Derby before he was sacked 😊

I wish there was a thread on here stating the facts about McClaren leaving Derby that first time. And the second time to give Rowett time to get to know the squad was an equally daft decision by Morris.

Here's Paul Simpson, assistant manager at the time:

“There’s an opportunity and we could go to Newcastle” but I told him I didn’t want to go. He asked for my opinion and I said, “You have to turn it down. This is where we need to stay.” He thought about it for a while and said, “I’m going to turn it down, as long as we’re able to commit ourselves for the next three years to finish this job.” I was willing to sign another contact.

‘I know for a fact that Steve turned Newcastle down. I said to Steve, “Look, I’m absolutely knackered. I want to go away with my wife for a couple of days, can I do it?” and he said, “Yeah, go and have some days in Spain.” So, he rang me on the Wednesday night and asked me when I was coming back, which was the next day. “Right, I think I’m getting the sack. I need you to come back.” He turned Newcastle down and then he got the sack.

‘We were left in a situation with nothing. Even when it got to the point that I was still employed, he said to me that Newcastle had come in for him again. When he got the job, he wanted me to come as his assistant and I said, “No. I’m not coming.” I told him I would only go if I got the sack at Derby. I wasn’t leaving Derby.’

Simpson wasn’t made to wait long before returning McClaren’s call.

How much would Knighty be worth next season if we get promoted this season. If he's happy to stay here then what would we lose?

Contracts due to end 2024: Knight, Bielek, Bird, Sibley, Cashin, Barkhuisen, Mendez-Laing, Thompson, Hourihane, Smith, Wildsmith, Collins, Odurah, Rooney and Forsyth. That's 15 of the present squad.
