CELTIC last night made a last-ditch move to sign Dundee United hitman Johnny Russell.

The Tannadice club have accepted a bid from Derby County for Russell who is due to travel to Pride Park on Monday to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.

But Record Sport understands Celtic have now officially entered the race for the sought-after striker and appear to be favourites to land him.

Italian Serie A outfit Catania and Reading are also in the chase but Neil Lennon is in pole position to keep the player in the SPL. The Celtic boss is determined to hijack the Rams’ move by tempting Russell with a lucrative offer and the chance to be part of his team’s Champions

League campaign.

United accepted a bid of around £750,000 for the 23-year-old, who has a year of his contract to run, and discussions are continuing with his representatives, Viola FC.

A United spokesman confirmed Derby’s intention to seal the deal.

He said: “The transfer is expected to be concluded after the player has completed the

necessary formalities early next week.”

But Celtic are now in the driving seat to snap up a player Lennon once tried to sign for £500,000.

there's  nothing on the bbc sport rumor page apart from " Johnny Russell, 23, could become a Derby County player next week after the Championship side had a bid for the striker, believed to be in the region of £700,000, accepted by Dundee United" but we already know that

;)

Johnny Russell will undergo a medical at Derby on Monday after the striker agreed personal terms with the Championship club.

Dundee United accepted a bid of about £750,000 for the 23-year-old, who had a year of his contract to run.

"The transfer is expected to be concluded after the player has completed the necessary formalities early next week," said United.

Russell scored 20 goals in the 2012-13 season.

The Tayside club added that they are "working extremely hard to bring in quality new players with a view to strengthening the squad".

And they remain in talks with Blackburn about bringing striker David Goodwillie back to Tannadice on loan.

Italian outfit Catania had repeated offers for Russell rejected, while other Championship sides have made recent enquiries about the product of United's youth system.

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has been open about his intention to sell Russell this summer while he is still under contract.

Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United also made unsuccessful moves for the player, in August and January, respectively.
