Celtic will face a four-way fight for Johnny Russell if they move for the Dundee United striker before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Sportsmail understands Huddersfield, Derby and Bolton have moved to the front of the queue and are now weighing up bids for the Scotland Under 21 striker this week.

Everton manager David Moyes has also been credited with an interest in the player but, although the Toffees were represented at United’s defeat at Rugby Park on Saturday, club sources have distanced themselves from talk of any imminent bid.

Huddersfield manager Simon Grayson is keen to take the player to Yorkshire although he will only match United’s £2million asking price in the event that Blackburn conclude a deal to sign Jordan Rhodes.

Both Nigel Clough and Owen Coyle are hopeful of landing the 22-year-old for Derby and Bolton respectively, having identified him as capable of firing the goals which could take them to the Premiership.

It is understood United have not received any concrete bid for their star player, but are anticipating a number of offers before the end of the week.

Celtic had two offers for Russell rejected in January — an initial one of £500,000 then another for the same fee that included a fringe player — and the striker has only grown in stature since then.

Lennon, also interested in taking Croatian striker Srdjan Lakic on loan from Wolfsburg, is a known admirer of Russell but it is likely he will now have to fend off stiff competition if he is to get him at the third time of asking.

I've actually watched two Dundee United matches this season and he looks a class above the rest in that league, scores goals for fun and looks cool on the ball he think he would be an outstanding signing playing just off Conor Sammon. I doubt we will get him as we don't have the buying power but you never know.

Usually Celtic are the best option v Championship sides. Slightly bigger money. Guaranteed trophy, easy games and you might get a lucky draw and have chance of playing at San Siro/Nou Camp etc.

I don't see many players picking a Championship side over Celtic unless they actually want to test themselves.

I like him, we've been linked before I think and looks quite good from what I've seen of him tbh. However, competition with Celtic, Bolton and Huddersfield, plus a 2million asking price from Dundee makes it seem rather unlikely he will be joining. However as the optimistic Derby fan, hopefully Clough can talk him into it like he did with Jacobs. Definite fire power upfront if we had him too.

I have heard good things about him, but the other 3 teams are in a much better financial position than us.

Also, a defensive midfielder would be a better acquisition IMO

Wasn't there an article/interview somewhere where Clough said that the board would be prepared to invest a bit more money if it were for a striker? Maybe that's whats happening here. Or maybe that was just a dream 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Either way, I'd be ecstatic if we got him, the guy's got it all. Pace, flair and can finish well.
