rams71
I pity the youngsters who never went to the BBG especially a night game when the place was rocking. The greatest football ground ever

PrivateDerby
Apparently it would start off looking like quite a nice pitch, but everyone knew it wouldn't last. About 15 minutes in it would change colour, then on the half hour mark it would start to lift up and by half time it was on it's last legs. Second half some lines would need marking out again, then despite the layer of sand it began to cultivate, by the end it was ploughed. My Grandad played on it a few times in the late 40s with the reserves and said you'd be running with the ball then wonder where it was and have to run back and get it! Other teams used to say it was worth at least a two goal advantage for us, and I can see why. And that was before Brian watered it in the middle of the night... If you were in the away end at the city ground last season you may have experienced sonething pretty close though. Having seen the video on a phone of the atmosphere when the winner went in I have to agree it came close...ish. But to have stood on the Popside at a match like this, with a crowd who seemed like family friends: It was like being at a good friend's house watching close personal friends put on an exhibition just for you. I'm so glad to have been there. Makes being older now worthwhile somehow. Those memories came flooding back watching this!
mozza
the atmosphere at the mid week european matches (Real Madrid, Benfica, Juve etc) was awesome, any night match, league or cup was just surreal. Saturday matches were good too, banter was always fun there, challenging 'C' stand to 'give us a song ' etc.. every match i had 'butterflies' in my stomach before kick off.. Great times. So could any of you bee so kind to tell me what the atomsphere was like 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I went to my first game in 1969, we were on the up and by the time of the Benfica game Steve wrote about above I felt we were almost invincible and because of this, almost everybody attending games were in a positive frame of mind and this contributed to an atmosphere that rocked the Basie (as we called it at school) Derby County feared no opposition, and the bigger their reputation it seemed the better we played. It was a magical period in our history and most of the time the game's greats (Eusabio, Charlton, Best Law, Banks, Greaves, Moore,) you name them, all left that ground on the wrong end of a tonking at one time or another....happy days. You could feel it as you came to the ground and there was a buzz in the air, especially night cup matches, the hair on your body would straighten, and I am convinced that you could cut a chuck out and pocket it! Brammie Steve
Atmosphere? Mo55y and I stood at the other end of the Popside for this one, surrounded by Wolves fans. We took Don Wood, a very placid friend, with us on this occasion. He objected to being jostled by Wolves fans when they equalised and I thought there was going to be a scrap. Imagine the "atmosfear" at the end of this one. Had these in the garage for years, bit of a family disagreement on whether they are from the Baseball Ground or the Victoria Ground, luckily it doesn't matter that much because they're mine! http://i46.tinypic.com/2cy32o2 http://i49.tinypic.com/55ov8 http://i45.tinypic.com/2m5gymv http://i47.tinypic.com/301fwc2 How much is 70s chewing gum worth? http://i46.tinypic.com/11k8u48 Does anyone recognise them from the Baseball Ground? ramsbottom
I think ive stood/sat in every part of that ground...so many memories... I miss the owd BBG..(great vid btw, nice find Steve 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> ) And me, I even watched a few games from the block of flats the 94/95 season Roy Mac was in charge. I think the only place I never got to sit was Normanton Upper, was always down the front when I sat there.
mozza
i don't recognise the seats either, PD, the ones i sat in were them, cheap plastic, uncomfortable ones in the Ley Stand. you know, the ones that Leeds and Chelsea took a dislike to, in the Normanton end. P.S ..i aint that flipping old ... 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
PrivateDerby
Sorry mate, didn't mean it like that 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> Nah there's no way chelsea or leeds could rip these out! I got told they were these ones, but can't be sure as apparently the ivory numbers used to get ripped off so they painted them on. Either way, think I'll build them up again. http://i46.tinypic.com/andb1x
