Didn't he play for us as well?

He played for the reserves but a knee injury ended his career. Instead he became a physio. and Brian Clough made him second team trainer in 1968. He used to drive a pale blue Vauxhall Viva, which stood out amongst the other swish motors in the car park opposite the players' entrance of the Baseball Ground.

Stalwart Guthrie recovering from illness in hospital

DERBY County stalwart Gordon Guthrie is on the road to recovery after being admitted to hospital a few weeks ago.

Guthrie has served the Rams for more than 50 years in a number of roles, including reserve-team player, coach and physio. He was awarded the MBE in 2009 for services to the club.

"He has been poorly for the last two or three weeks and we all miss him being around Moor Farm and Pride Park," said manager Nigel Clough.

"He is admired by everyone at Derby County and we hope to see him back soon, once he has made a full recovery.

"It is strange when you walk down the corridor at Moor Farm in the morning and he's not there. "

Guthrie has worked under 19 managers at Derby. Throw in the odd caretaker manager and the figure is pushed up to 23.

He was in the dugout as physio during Derby's successful years in the late 1960s and early 70s, when Brian Clough and Peter Taylor were in charge and the Rams were champions of England and a force in Europe.

Guthrie was also there when Dave Mackay's team lifted the title in 1974-5 and during the Arthur Cox years when Derby won successive promotions and finished fifth in the old First Division
