At 15 years and 99 days, the striker became the youngest first-team player in the club's history when he started Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, smashing the record previously held by winger Lee Holmes by 169 days.

He would have become the youngest goalscorer in Football League history had he succeeded with two decent chances, the second of which rattled the crossbar.

That record is currently held by Ronnie Dix of Bristol Rovers, who hit the back of the net aged 15 and 180 days in 1928.

"We are very excited about him. He is a very exciting prospect," Clough told the assembled press after the game at the Riverside. "Mason will be in the 18 next weekend against Portsmouth and we will take it from there.

"He will not be involved every week with us, that is a bit too much to expect of a 15-year-old. But the odd time when we are short - and we are at the moment - we will get him involved. The more experience he gets, the better he will be for it."
