Day
Nigel Clough hopes Chris Riggott will be able to play some part in Derby County's pre-season matches sooner rather than later. The 30-year-old central defender, who is without a club after leaving Cardiff City last season, is working his way back to full fitness following back surgery a few months ago. He has been working with the medical team throughout pre-season on a one-to-one basis and stepped up his return by joining in with the first-team earlier this week. Clough has told Riggott, who burst onto the scene in 2000 with Derby after graduating from the Academy before leaving for Middlesbrough in 2003, that as long as he proves he is over his injury problems, a deal will be on the table for him at Pride Park. If all goes to plan, with games against Macclesfield and Morecambe lined up for next week as well as a reserve friendly against Eastwood Town next Saturday, Riggott could feature at some stage. "Chris has had some involvement this week and is stepping things up nicely," said Clough. "Maybe, just maybe, we hope to get him out on the pitch for a short time next week. "It is a gradual process with Chris, but if he can get there (full fitness) we think he will be a very good addition to the squad. "He has a good few years ahead of him and speaking to him, he feels good. "Chris wants to play again, you can really tell that." Clough also thinks Riggott's leadership qualities would also be a welcome addition to Derby's young squad. He added: "We have a young squad, so we need some experience. "Chris is a good talker and organiser, which we like." http://www.dcfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10270~2393775,00.html tbc.

Day
CHRIS Riggott is in line to start for Derby County in tomorrow's friendly at Morecambe. Riggott has been training with the Rams and building his fitness in a bid to earn a contract this season. He sat out the friendlies against Burton Albion and Macclesfield Town but he has travelled with the squad to their training base at Formby in the north west. The 30-year-old defender trained yesterday afternoon when Derby used Wigan Athletic's Christopher Park training ground. "If everything goes well he is down to start and maybe play 45 minutes, which would be a great boost," said manager Nigel Clough. "Chris trained Wednesday and if he comes through Friday morning's session and feels happy, we will get him out there for some part of the game against Morecambe. "If he is going to play some part, he might as well start the game and see how he feels towards half-time." New signing Jason Shackell did some light jogging in training yesterday. Shackell, one of Derby's summer signings, has had his pre-season interrupted by a calf injury. The 27-year-old central defender is hoping to play some part in the friendlies against Exeter City and Aston Villa before the Championship campaign starts on August 6. http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/story-12979382-detail/story.html
