Sky News has learned that it is costing taxpayers £250,000 per day to protect the Olympic venues.

The figure is more than treble the amount it cost to look after the venues a year ago.

In 2011, safeguarding the sites has cost the Government £35m.

Sky's Olympic correspondent Orla Chennaoui said in September alone it cost £7.5m to keep the venues secure.

"If you break that down, it's quite staggering, it's a quarter of a million pounds a day that the Government is paying," she explained.

Chennaoui said the money is being spent on fencing, security guards provided by the company G4S and screening of staff going in and out of the venues.

How the fook can that cost 250000k a day?? 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

We should win the fencing gold then, with all that money being ploughed into it. 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

My daughter's going with school, they're watching the preliminary round of mens basketball and womens volleyball and they will be staying overnight at either Surrey Uni or Eton college, all for a princely sum of £278 fookin quid 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> . Chance of a lifetime for her though.

Only thing is it's booked with Thomas Cook 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> - I'm glad I am paying it monthly.

I cocur, but if you have booked a holiday, you are safe, flight only, and your pants may be down, exposing your arse.

very good 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> from what i read though they only had problems because they needed capital to get through the winter slowdown which for a holiday company in this financial climate makes sense, however the shares dropped by 50%.

MoD thinking about putting surface to air missiles near the Olympic Park for the duration.

I feel so sorry for the residents, millions of £ being pumped into their local economy and they have the 'inconvenience' of some extra security. One resident was worried in case some debris was showered onto the estate where he lives if they were fired in anger. Maybe he should think about the 100,000 or so who would be endangered in the Olympic park if they were not fired when necessary. They are a deterrent - nothing more.

It's good to get a Monday morning grump out of the way early 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The Olympic torch will be coming into Derbyshire next Friday, so to get in the spirit, I might take the kids to watch.

I can see why watching one person carrying a torch followed by a couple of dozen motors might not be everyone's cuppa tea but I'm only going to see it once here with us kids, so we might as well make the most of it.

And it's good to see worthy people having the chance to carry it. I felt for this lad, bless him.
