Grant was given a chance by new Derby boss Phil Brown during the 2005–06 pre-season, but was again relegated to the bench by the start of the season. He played his first game of the season on 24 August 2005 as Derby crashed out of the League Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town.[15] Another injury followed a fortnight later when Grant fractured his metatarsal during training, and was out of action for another two weeks.[16]

Burnley (on Loan)

After playing just three games in 18 months, Grant was allowed to join Championship club Burnley on a one-month loan on 15 November 2005 as cover for the suspended Brian Jensen.[17][18] Grant went straight in to the team and made his debut for Burnley against Leicester City on 19 November, but despite a one-month extension to the loan, Grant failed to force Jensen out as first choice 'keeper and did not play again for the first team before returning to Derby. Grant returned to his parent club on 14 January 2006 with Burnley manager Steve Cotterill claiming that the club were unable to continue to pay his high wages and that "he may go on loan somewhere else where he will play all the time".[19]

Phil Brown signed Poole, whom he had previously worked with at Bolton, as a goalkeeping coach for Derby County in July 2005. Although he was also registered as a player, this was initially intended only for emergencies;[12] however he was unexpectedly promoted to first choice for a spell due to poor form and injuries affecting young goalkeepers Lee Camp and Lee Grant.[13][14] The 42-year-old Poole played seven times for the first team before returning to coaching duties. He was released in May 2006 after Brown's management team departed Derby County.[15]

Injuries and loans to me.

I think you skipped over the poor form bit my friend!!! :) I can't remember the dates of loans.

surely Deeney is on small wages and would be better than calling in an emergency loan or recalling one of the younger 'keepers from their loan to sit on the bench? i think Fielding is a good first choice, Legzdins provides competition and Deeney is just in case. Meanwhile our two young goalkeepers are out on loan gaining experience.

What's more useful to the team? Using one of the 5 loan spots to provide a creative or good defensive player or picking up a third choice keeper because we haven't got enough at the club.

Last season we could have done with more outfield options but had to use a loan slot or two on keepers.

Maybe that's why we have so many.

Poole came in and put in a shift twice as good as Camp or Grant had played that season IMO, remember that game was very shocked but pleased with how the veteran played!

To be fair Grant only played 3 games in 18 months at that point, so abit harsh to say Poole put a better shift than grant, I did remember Poole played very well in the match

Burton Albion's Adam Legzdins has today become Derby County's second goalkeeper signing of the summer.

Hot on the heels of England under-21 international Frank Fielding's arrival earlier in the summer, 24-year-old Legzdins has signed a three-year contract after the Rams agreed an undisclosed fee with the npower League Two club.

Legzdins played in all 46 of Burton's npower League Two games last season and his impressive performances for the Brewers earned him rave reviews, as well as the Burton Albion Supporters' Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards.

Derby boss Nigel Clough said: "We highlighted the importance of having a good number two to back Frank up some time ago and we feel that Adam fits the bill for us.

"We want Ross Atkins to go out on loan again this season and get some experience and Saul Deeney won't be back from his shoulder injury until later in the year, so bringing another goalkeeper in has been a priority.

"Adam is at a good age as well and we feel he is a goalkeeper who will improve all the time and challenge Frank for his place."

A former Birmingham City trainee, Legzdins never featured for City's first-team but he had loan spells at Alfreton Town, Halifax Town, Macclesfield Town and Oldham Athletic to gain first-team experience.

He eventually left Birmingham in 2008 and spent two years at Crewe Alexandra, but he only made eight appearances for the Gresty Road side.

He rejected fresh terms in favour of a move to Burton last summer, and he went on to keep 11 cleans sheets in his 46 league appearances.
