Okay, so a bit of a tongue in cheek title there, but let's imagine for a minute its this time next year and Derby have gone up to the Championship, perhaps even winning the league (yay)! Warne has put the doubters to rest and Clowes has been praising his achievement to the hilt.

So thoughts turn to staying up and prospering in the Championship and the elephant in the room is that Warne has not managed to do this previously.

As we understand it, what went wrong at Rotherham each time and how much of that can be pinned on Warne?

How can Warne's Derby avoid the same fate as Warne's Rovrum?

Outsiders are going to see this thread with the same eyes they saw @David’s “Promote us now” thread.  Despite that clearly being tongue in cheek. For that reason… I’m oot!

Warne never had more than £7-8m wage budget in the Championship that dropped when in League One. At the same time the majority of the division would’ve been on £15-20m plus - ourselves were around the £40m mark. Some of the relegated clubs were on £60, 70m plus - some even exceeded £100m.

Can you imagine the amount of players he would’ve wanted but ultimately lost out on because of the financial restrictions?

The difference Warne has here is that he’ll be working on double or triple the budget, he won’t be throwing money about but equally he’ll finally be in the championship with a competitive budget for the very first time.

I'm going to strip away all the hypothetical context and go straight in to the nitty gritty.

Does Paul Warne have the ability to keep a club in the Championship?

To which my answer would be, I don't see why not. Worse managers have done so.

Whilst he may not have done it with Rotherham, a club that with all due respect, do not have resources or the ability to attract players to make the job a simple one.

They stayed up last season without him, true, however they were flying high in the top 10 when Warne left, only lost 1 game in the 2 months which gave them a great head start.

He was at Rotherham previously - now he is with Derby County

That's a much better way of putting the question, thanks!
