Jason Shackell

Remember the overpriced, past his prime, money grabbing mercenary we signed from a certain claret and blue side this summer? Well according to statistics site "squawka", he has been the best player in the division this season.

Cheers, Ginger Mouriniho!

Carson comes in at 3, Keogh 6 and Thorne 7

Shackell's passing ranges from poor to mediocre but it doesn't really matter when Keogh can be the passer and that's as negative as this post is going to get - his defending is absolutely top notch. A good centre back is often one you don't notice and his positioning is his greatest asset by far. The number of shots he blocks is massive. Try and think of moments when Shackell has been exposed or had to do last ditch tackles. Xabi Alonso said in an interview that the best defenders don't need to tackle and Shackell embodies that.

The unsung hero of our side this season and an absolute rock. I'm glad the stats show his value even if the naked eye doesn't. Was an outstanding defender last season so him being the best in the league should surprise no-one.

I'd love to know how many shots he's blocked this season and if there is a player in the country with more. Does anyone have a chart showing clearances, blocks, tackles etc?

Using the same website, certainly not in the top two leagues:

The overall top 10 for the league (the next Derby player on the list is Keogh at 33rd):

Not bad viewing, we are the only team with positive points for the possession category lol

He's been the best defender in the Championship for the past four or five seasons, didn't look out of place last year either.

Not got a clue why Burnley didn't offer him a bumper deal, he's not "past his best" at all. Experience playing against Aguero and co will make you a better player if anything.
