In keeping with the current mood which is depressing everyone following the unmitigated disaster of Saturday's performance and result, coupled with the utter magnificence of Physco and Fridgy's Florists as they storm the league and begin their unstoppable Quest For A Third Star, I should like to take this opportunity to inform people that a little-known volcano in Iceland, B

Ten days in, the earthquake swarm continues unabated, with several M5+ earthquakes in the Bardarbunga crater.

The Icelandic Met Office tonight announced that they think that an eruption has already started under the ice, because they are seeing 'ice cauldrons' (basically depressions of 10-20 metres in depth), probably caused by the ice underneath melting.

The fissure swarm is now around 40 km in length, and is filled, they think, with about 300 million cubic metres of magma.

The eruption HAS started in the wee small hours - fissure eruption (as predicted) outside the glacier, nice and visible. Not hugely spectacular - in fact, not really spectacular at all, but nobody knows how it's going to develop.

As to where to read about it - http://volcanocafe.wordpress.com - lurk or join in. I'm 'eddiethebrewer' on there and, naturally, Derby County get the odd mention (Icelanders like sheepies too). With the hurricane also heading for Iceland, of course the big concern is whether there will be a hurricuption with magma-spitting sharks in a future SciFi Channel movie.

It's a site for real volcanophiles and 'amateur' scientists, but there are some pretty cool and incredibly knowledgeable people there (geologists etc). One rule - DO NOT LINK to any pages from vedur or en.vedur websites - they are the IMO (Iceland Met Office) sites, and as such are referenced by the emergency services.

There's a YouTube live stream that someone's put together...

Fissure eruption now over 1 km in length - kicked off properly last night. Unfortunately the post-tropical storm Cristobal has now reached Iceland so the webcams are picking up nothing but dust

New dashboard of things and interesting stuff. Got some nice lava fountains now. The webcam's bouncing al over the place because of high winds (ex-hurricane Cristobal has just made landfall)

Just heard earlier today about a solar storm which we just missed in July 2012, which would have sent us back to the 18th century in technology terms.

It missed us by a week, which is tiny in cosmic terms. Basically it happened a week after the Earth's orbit took us to the area of space where it happened and it would have wiped out all electrical equipment and even things like running water (which rely on electrical pumps from the water companies).

Scary stuff. Presumably even those watching the sun would only have 8 minutes notice of our imminent demise.

Believe it or not, that image above is 'just' a screenshot from a webcam, completely unenhanced. Just cropped to remove tabs indicating the site I was surfing
