The unemployment rate for new college graduates is as poor in the US as in the UK and several other countries.Their are not many jobs anymore that have good salaries but do not require a college degree.Sometimes it is prudent to choose a major regardless if you like it just for its prospects. For instance a friend of mine is a petroleum engineering major and hates it but has already been contacted by several companies about post-grad employment.

In the sector I work in a degree isnt enough anymore, in such a competitive job market, in any field, we should never assume the completion of a degree is the end of it - actually its just the start. Lifelong learning is the way to go, a masters, further online/distance courses, professional development programs, the need to evolve with the changing world, to keep learning always will set an individual apart from the competition.

The knowledge gained at university is only relevant in that time period. Even 5 years later, new practice, approaches, research, technological developments etc make what you learnt then mostly obsolete.

Keeping up to date with changing trends in any field is the only way to ensure you stay at the top of your profession.

Other alternatives for career success and promotion are:-

Brown nosing

Wearing high heels and low revealing tops (usually females, in a lower-skilled male dominated sector - but not always)

Possessing incriminating information, ideally photos, of people above you

Having the right family name or just knowing some one

Bullshitting

Being **** at your job so you keep being moved onward and invariably upward (usually in public sector roles)

Backhanders

Ensuring blame is always directed towards a work peer

Not sure if they teach this stuff at "Uni"?

You'll eventually get found out in the end and besides when you have the knowledge, skill set, experience, drive etc. none of the things you list will keep you at the top. The list you mention is for those talentless fecks who will never be more than middle managers, like l say they all get found out in the end.
