Steve McClaren is set to sign a new contract at Derby County and will be given funds to build a squad for another promotion challenge.

McClaren, the former England manager, is expected to agree an improved deal before pre-season after guiding the Championship club to May’s play-off final.

The 53-year-old has two years remaining on the contract he signed in September last year but Derby have moved swiftly to open negotiations over new terms.

McClaren endured a bitterly disappointing return to Wembley after the late defeat to Queens Park Rangers but his achievements last season were impressive after he replaced Nigel Clough.

Derby won 24 from 41 games to eventually finish third and McClaren has already been linked with Southampton and West Bromwich Albionthis summer.

But the Yorkshireman is settled at the iPro Stadium and ready to pledge his long-term future to the club in the next few weeks.

The new deal is likely to be for three years and will include a hefty compensation clause in the event of any club making an official approach.

Derby’s board are also promising money will be made available to strengthen his squad, with a £950,000 offer for Albion midfielder George Thorne rejected last week.

Thorne remains a priority target for McClaren and Derby are hopeful of resuming talks with West Brom now that Alan Irvine has been appointed as head coach.

McClaren is also keen to sign a striker to ease the pressure on last season’s top scorer Chris Martin, while it is believed he will target another two or three signings this summer.

So he has two years left and this is effectively for three years on enhanced terms - not a three year extension on the two years.

Can't say I'm surprised - if anyone has earned an contract extension it's Steve Mc last season. I don't think any of us saw it coming quite like it panned out.

No mention of Simmo though - was he on the same length two year contract?

Excellent news and hopefully in the near future some quality signings. Really pleased simmo and eric are signing new contracts. Eric is probably the best goalkeeping coach in the country and really helped lee grant improve greatly.

I've always thought getting Steele in was a real coup, he's not one of the best gk coaches in the UK, or Europe for that matter, he's one of the best in the world! no exaggeration he is rated so highly in the game. I think the fact that Steve's got good people around him empowers him even more, long May it continue!
