As someone mentioned before roots are negatively phototrophic but positively geotrophic and hydrotrophic, hence they grow downwards. Stems on the other hand, are positively phototrophic, they grow towards the light, so that the chloroplasts can actively photosynthesize. Yes, I teach Biology.
