2013 Ashes Series

Looked good until a silly shot in the first innings and a bad decision in the second at Trent Bridge but Trott is looking in good nick early on this series, which is good news...especially with Bell starting well too. We'll see what happens with Root and Bairstow.

Put the mockers on him, never seen him get out like that before. Was looking in supreme touch too, lets hope Bell can go on again

Bairstow got very, very lucky, bowled off a no-ball. I am not convinced that he has the technique to make it as test No 6 yet, because he doesn't play every ball on its merits. He sees the ball pitched up, goes into "blaze the half-volley through midwicket" mode - but looks where he thinks the ball should be going instead of watching it out of the bowler's hand.

Bumble's saying exactly the same thing as I type this - bloody spying on me.

Tiddlywinks ?

Take a projectile that weighs 15 - 16 pounds more than that, a playing-area which measures 40 inches by 62 feet and 10 inches and traditionally comprised 39 separate boards, constructed of Pine and Canadian Maple, a target area which is 60 feet away from the player at point of release, a target (or rather 10 of them) that weigh between 3 pound 6 ounces and 3 pound 10 ounces, and a game with a maximum score of 300 and you've got your magic sport.

And yes, I've done it at Leeds too (then gone over the road for some beer and noms in the Wetherspoons and a few games of roulette in the Stick or Twist Casino).

225-4 England doing great. Bell 83. Bairstow 48

It's a great recovery - and it needs to be. This wicket is an absolute road at the moment - but it WILL turn on days 4 and 5. I thought at the start that it was a 400 wicket, and I see no reason to re-think the par score at the moment. what I will re-think now is the likelihood of England achieving that par score - and I'm veering towards 'possibly' from 'not a chance in hell'.

Vital that they do not lose more than 1 more wicket tonight (the new ball period will be crucial). Get through that and we can start thinking in terms of a draw at worst - and this morning, it was looking decidedly dicky.

And with England looking comfortable, they suddenly go into self-destruct mode. Steve Smith, part-time leggie whose test match wickets have all been at Lord's except for one, rips three out.

A comfortable 400 suddenly turns into a struggle to make 300.

Wild prediction - England to just lead on first innings, with Swann being the main man.

I'd of taken our score at cease play this morning when we were struggling early doors but I can't help but think we've wasted another good opportunity. Bell and Bairstow brought us right out of the brown stuff thankfully but it would have been ideal to see the day out with those 2 still at the crease. Credit to Smith for the late wickets but we've got to be doing better or we'll be scraping over the line test after test.

Makes good viewing for the neutral but I can't cope with this topsy-turvy theme we're seeing so far!

Skittles, old English pub in Matlock, RIP.

We still play, not that you can call it that judging by our scores.....

Back to cricket, the Aussies are 5/2 to win the test, not a bad bet I would have thought.

I reckon that the bookies just looked at how Steve Smith bowled on it, and thought that Swanny would be better. I'm not so sure - Smith is a leggie and really rips it. Swann will be key in the second innings, but the England seamers will have to do the business first.
