Ipswich spent 2.4 million in transfers and average age was 29.

We need the spine of the team with experience. And a few fresh players around the older experienced players.

Remember when Cloughie brought in Dave MacKay people said he was past it. Cloughie put some younger players  around him as you never lose the football brain.

75 we we won the league i think we had half the team around 30 years old.

    We need experience.

  3. PW will have new players in know doubt about that.

It's whether we find ourselves mid table or top half by Xmas.

Not too sure of PW's record in the Championship?

Seems to be the one that can get a team up from league 1 but ......

Let's stay as we are regarding contracts and see how we are in the Championship first.

Xmas 24 maybe a time to look at and make decisions for the future.

You never know we could do an Ipswich now that would fantastic!

Yes but as I said, how would a one off game prove they can compete? We all know a one off game isn’t necessarily proof of anything. Your suggestion is that they can compete against the team finishing third. Well so what? Why should they have to “prove” they can compete against a single team in the league above?  And, as I said, the team claiming the third promotion spot might well strengthen their squad anyway so this one off game definitely wouldn’t prove anything.

I like the play offs system (although I do understand the point regarding the team finishing third potentially feeling hard done by if they don’t make it) but I certainly wouldn’t be giving the team finishing third from bottom another chance to avoid the drop.

    Why not?

The team finishing 3rd is certainly not good enough for promotion in that particular division. Hence why it always worked fairly before the football league grubby little fingers got involved to make more money. 2 up 2 down or 3 up 3 down, promotion and relegation is based over season not on whether you can finish 6th and get promotion.

Why would you want to give the team finishing 3rd from bottom in the Championship or below another chance to avoid relegation simply because the team finishing third in the league below were not good enough on the day to beat them in a one off game (or two games if played over two legs)? The fact that the team finishing third MIGHT not be good enough to play in the division above isn’t sufficient justification for another team to avoid relegation.

If you hate the idea of the team finishing third missing out against the team finishing 6th possibly due to injuries or because they had an off day, wouldn’t you hate the idea of the team finishing third losing out to the team finishing 3rd from bottom potentially for the same reasons?

    If we must have playoffs-

Top 2 and bottom 2 swap over- like the olden days.

Team finishing 3rd has to prove that can compete with the team who finished 3rd bottom.

Bearing in mind they would have two weeks at the end of the season to prepare for a one off Wembly game.

Or do away with the playoffs altogether and go 3 up 3 down.

After all its about how you do over a season rather than either 1 or 3 games.

Hate this idea, it gives a team in the Premier League who has been able to enjoy the fruits of £150m plus revenues to snatch the same chance away from a championship club who are probably turning over £20-25m (if not already subsidised by parachute payments).

Last season it would’ve matched Luton with their £18m turnover and £24m wage bill (a lot of which would’ve been promotion bonus payouts) against Leicester with their £177m turnover and their £171m wage bill.

It’s bad enough with 5 parachute payment clubs in the top 6 this season. It’s already becoming an ever-increasingly difficult proposition for non-parachute payment clubs to compete - this makes it much more difficult.

I said .."Premier league and championship would be a straight swap. Bottom. 3 for the top 3."

  7. To make the playoffs more justifiable they should be done something like this.

    Top two automatic promotion

Whoever finishes 3rd has to play the team 3rd bottom from the league above. This then proves whether they are capable of playing in that league above.

I hate to think a team finishes 3rd is beaten in the playoff final by the 6th place side just because they had an off day or too many injuries.

Premier league and championship would be a straight swap. Bottom. 3 for the top 3.

It's not about fairness it's about the football league's grubby little fingers making money.

I agree but I'm just saying, don't count your chickens. As has been mentioned previously, it's not that long again that we only needed a draw at home to lowly Reading (admittedly, a different proposition to playing Carlisle - I hope) to make the play offs but we ended up losing.

I'm also predicting a draw in that final game Posh v Bolton but who knows what will happen. One team may be resting players for the play offs whilst the other is going all guns blazing in order to overtake us. Look at last season. Barnsley, already in the play offs and 12 points ahead of Posh, end up losing 2:0 at home to them on the last day.

Yes, but that all irrelevant if we win on Saturday or even both our games its promotion.

Posh can max out on 89pt

We beat Cambridge 89pt with plus 10 GD - I cannot see us losing at home to Carlisle.

Not the same as getting into the playoffs in 2015 ....this is promotion!

  9. Sometimes pretty football does always gain promotion

In this league it's about the results. And we have them!

When we virtually get promotion on Saturday, nobody will be moaning about any past performances - it will be hats off to PW job virtually done!

Don't forget, we also need to better Peterborough's result as well to be absolutely certain on Saturday. They've got a big goal difference to make up (probably most of it over their next two games as I can't see either Bolton or Posh beating the other by more than a goal or two) but, you never know. We may need to keep the champagne on ice.

I can see their last game against Bolton going for a draw at that will be their 3rd game in a week.

Either way the win against Cambridge  and its promotion because I cannot see relegated Carlisle putting up a fight in the final game with 30,000 plus screaming in their faces.

Yeah they have Shrewsbury and Port Vale at home next up so if they get a win v pompy then we're most likely going into the last day in 3rd....

If Bolton win today I have a bad feeling they will win their remaining games too.

We need Pompey to get something today.
