Bolton, Barnsley, and Peterborough all finished last season above us and they are all in contention again this season. They are good teams. They are the benchmark for us this season. We knew that if we wanted to get promoted, it’s these teams we would have to outperform.

There is no contradiction. I am saying they are good teams in a competitive league. If the league wasn’t competitive, these teams and indeed ourselves would be dropping points far less frequently.

How much of an advantage have we had with Wigan and Reading being in financial difficulties and having points deductions really? Reading and Wigan have beaten us this season. Reading have pipped us to transfer targets. Surely it’s the likes of Portsmouth, Oxford, Blackpool and Stevenage who have profited from this?

So if teams finish above us, that must only mean they are good? Its impossible that they could be above us because we're bad, is it? Just because teams are "the benchmark", doesn't prove they're good.

How does the fact no-one is pulling away in the league prove that its of high quality and competitive? It just proves there are no good teams, because a good team would be pulling away.

Its an advantage in the fact that - the vast majority of the time, relegated teams are competitors for promotion the following season. Therefore its three direct competitors removed from the equation, fighting for three spots. Whether Reading/Wigan beat us in a one-off game is irrelevant. Its where they are in the league table.

The point being discussed was that we are only where we are because the league is poor. If that was true, why aren’t Bolton, Barnsley and Peterborough taking advantage and running away with the league?

Doesn't that sentence contradict itself? The answer is because those teams aren't that good, and supports the point that the league isn't strong.

What makes a league strong or weak, much like what makes a football team good to watch, is purely subjective.

Once again, what does that even mean? More waffle. Why don't you actually express an opinion for once?

It was 2014-15 the last time none of the relegated teams competed for promotion or play-offs. What is the relevance?

Because its almost unprecedented. Two even having points deductions. Its basically removing three strong rivals before the seasons started. Why can't you concede its a rare advantage to Derby.

There are countless other examples of relegated teams (Bolton, Ipswich, Wednesday, Charlton, Sunderland) who have not adjusted to League 1 so easily and there are teams that have taken years to rebuild and get out of the league. Some are still stuck here.

There's also examples of teams who have gone straight back up. We're a bigger club than the examples you gave, except Wednesday and Sunderland, and they were both still in the middle of their difficulties while in L1.

Why put us down so much? I know you're going to say we have to deal with where we are, and the reality is we're a L1 club at the moment. But comparing us to Charlton? come on.

@Andicis it’s not just you, but you are the most recent culprit.

I don’t get this constant need to discredit the league and the teams within in it. It’s league football and each league every season is tough in its own way. A new season brings change, new opportunities, new variables and also new challenges.

What does that even mean? It just sound like meaningless corporate waffle.

When was the last time all three relegated Championship teams weren't challenging for promotion the following season?

Isn’t helpful especially in this topic? What does that mean?

As in, it’s not helpful because this is a topic in which people want to argue for sacking the manager and pointing out that the club (despite some very poor performances) are still at the right end of the table doesn’t support that one perspective?

Surely on a forum in which views and opinions are meant to be shared and discussed (ideally with some respect to opposing ideas) it’s entirely helpful to discuss that we are well positioned in the league despite our lacklustre performances at times, and therefore there’s still room for optimism and it doesn’t all need to be doom and gloom.

I realise now why I took a week off, I’m just going to stick to matchday threads I think.

Its not helpful to ignore caveats regarding how well the team is doing on a topic regarding how well the manager is doing.

I agree, views and opinions are meant to be shared on the forum. You wouldn't think that recently given the vitriol directed at anyone who expresses any sort of negative opinion of Warne.

All I did was highlight something obvious everyone's ignoring. What's wrong with that?

Bolton have to play those games in a condensed timeframe, which could just as easily see them drop points and suffer fatigue and injuries.

It could also transpire that they win their games in hand and overtake us in the table.

None of that is decided yet, however as it stands, we are currently second in the table, there’s nothing wrong with observing that any more than there is with people’s observations about the recent performances not being good enough.

The polarised views of “this or that” on the forum are such a slog to read through.

We are second in the league, and we could be performing better, both things are true. Thankfully, despite dropping points from a winning position yesterday, we’ve got plenty of other games to pick up points. It’s not pretty, it’s a slog at times for sure, but there’s as much room for optimism as there is pessimism as far as I’m concerned, games to play, points to be won, players to return from injury. I’ll just keep rolling with it until the end of the season and see where we are then.

Its good to be optimistic, but everyone saying "we're second" despite there being a glaringly obvious caveat isn't helpful, especially in this topic.

Of course I hope Bolton lose their two games, but is it not more likely than not that they won't?

Yeah, can everyone stop quoting facts.

Here’s one for you, Derby have got double the number of points that Bolton have in the last two games.

I apologise for simply being realistic

what i was trying to get at in the first place is that we shouldn't use penalties to judge players overall performances.

Certain people have been saying things like 'how amazing collins has been this season, and he's been our star player because look how many goals he's got'. If you put the penalties to one side (because it's a fact they boost all your performance related stats), he has 9 league goals. The earlier table showed he was about 54th in the league for shooting stats. Are people really saying thats our star player? Just off the top of my heaad, I think we would miss Nelson, Cashin, Forsyth, Bird, NML, Wilson, Nyambe, Hourihane, more than we would miss Collins.

I would agree apart from the fact we don't have another striker currently. I've always thought Waghorn was better when he was available.

I do think you're harsh on Collins. He's just doing what the manager instructs to the best of his ability, and he's doing well in that regard. He's doing good overall.

I am using my common sense, I’m applying the facts. A penalty goal is a goal, it counts in a match and is counted in statistics. The player who scores the penalty goal has a goal recorded against their name and it counts towards their personal goal tally and the goals scored by the team, there’s no inflating stats, there’s no padding, it’s is a factual recording of a goal scored.
Cristiano Ronaldo is largely regarded as one of the greatest goalscorers to play the game, he’s scored over 150 penalty goals in his career, do you think he’d let anyone take them off his record? Messi over 100 penalty goals. Shearer over 70. Rooney 48. Brazilian Ronaldo 47.

Yes, a penalty is worth the same as any other goal, I never said otherwise. Do you not agree the player who is on penalties generally gets more goals as a result? If Hourihane was on pens he would be on more goals this season and Collins on less. That's all I'm saying.

  9. 2 hours ago, Kernow said:

We missed two penalties against Morecombe last season and didn't win the game as a result. A win in that game would have had us finish in the play-offs and may even be a Championship side right now.

England could be reigning European champions if penalties were easy enough to just be disregarded.

Every goal is worth the same, I don't really care how they go in, scoring penalties shouldn't be a way to be negative towards a player...

Its not about how important penalties are. Of course they're important. The point is - the player who is on penalties gets an advantage over other players in terms of their goal tally for the season. Why is that so hard to understand?

  10. 10 minutes ago, Caerphilly Ram said:

It’s still the same odd argument, “stats inflated”… 🤦🏻‍♂️

Is it a goal or not? Yes. Very simply. If a goal is scored from the penalty spot it counts as a goal the same as a 30 yard screamer, a bicycle kick, a diving header, or a rebound following a failed clearance by the keeper into the attacker. And if that goal leads to one team scoring more than their opponent they win the game.

Just use your common sense. Obviously the penalty taker gets a bit of an advantage in goal scoring terms than other players, that's all I'm saying.

If Nelson was on penalties for some reason his goal record would be up. Of course he'd probably miss more than Collins but still.

  11. 9 minutes ago, Foreveram said:

So if a goalkeeper pulls someone down just as he’s going to put the ball in the net and then that player takes the penalty and scores, I presume that one counts but others don’t 😂

I'm not saying a penalty shouldn't be counted at all, bit every clubs penalty taker has their stats inflated. You can't argue that it's just a fact.

Using your example - what if the player who got pulled down wasn't the penalty taker? the penalty taker would get the goal they deserved in a way.

  12. 2 minutes ago, Foreveram said:

Rubbish, what if someone taps into an empty net from a yard out, is that more difficult than a penalty then.

Depends. Players get lucky goals now and then, but what if the tap in was a result of excellent movement?

The thing about a penalty taker is - they might not even be involved in the winning of the penalty at all, but still get the goal at the end.

  13. 34 minutes ago, David said:

Mbappe missed a penalty tonight. The Mbappe. But let’s remove Collins penalties hey….

Every clubs penalty taker has their stats inflated - this is just a fact. Obviously they still have to put them away so its wrong to remove them entirely like @Chris_Martin is suggesting. It is true however that they shouldn't be regarded as highly as a goal from open play.

  14. 3 minutes ago, Chris_Martin said:

surely you know by now, wide players only have one job in this team, cross.

Well he's not that good at that either judging by his 1 assist all season. He's a wing-back.

Blackett-Taylor will be the other winger with NML now anyway

  15. 1 hour ago, Chris_Martin said:

I like wilson, think he's been pretty good. He is not a defender though. Maybe a wing back at a push, but he is definetely more suited to playing RW/RM

Ward and Elder have largely been 💩

He has no shooting ability whatsoever
