Members of the Championship club’s backroom staff were regular visitors to Bramall Lane last season and are believed to have submitted a glowing report of the right-back’s qualities to manager Nigel Clough.

Kevin McCabe, United’s owner and plc chairman, confirmed Danny Wilson, Clough’s counterpart, would not be forced to sell any of his young stars despite last month’s defeat in the League One play-off final at Wembley. However McCabe, who has effectively bankrolled several of United’s latest signings, acknowledged they could be forced to review the situation should anyone express a desire to leave.

Lowton, whose partnership with midfielder Lee Williamson delivered 19 goals during the 2011/12 campaign, is unlikely to agitate for a move having appeared to reaffirm his commitment to United on several occasions before their loss on penalties to Huddersfield Town.

But Wilson recently acknowledged that failure to achieve promotion could prompt some members of his squad to reconsider their futures.

Ipswich Town, who have already seen one offer for Lowton rejected, also feature among his list of suitors.

Lowton has made nearly 100 appearances for United since making his senior debut against Cardiff City in March 2010. Despite making a slow start to his professional career, which at one stage saw him loaned to non-league Sheffield FC, Lowton credited a spell with Hungarian giants Ferencvaros for equipping him with the qualities required to prosper at senior level.

Paul Jewell, the Ipswich manager, has continued to monitor the 22-year-old’s progress despite baulking at United’s valuation a year ago.

With Wilson describing Lowton as the archetypical “modern full-back” en route to the divisional showpiece with Simon Grayson’s side, any offer is likely to spark a scramble for his services.[/size]

Could be bye bye Shackell and Brayford moving into centre back. Just say not stirring as we know we have had an offer for Shackell. If we get 1.6mill for Shackell buy this lad for say 750k leaves the remainder to go on the striker.

Brayford likes Centre Half and started there and that could be good combo on right side of the defence.

Good thinking Batman.

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Hope this doesn't mean Brayford is off. In all fairness i wouldn't mind brayford leaving for 2.5m if the rest of the money was spent on a ST. We'll have to see. If he can play midfield then that may justify the Bailey sale without a replacement.

If (huge if) this is true, then it can only mean that Brayford is on his way.

Everything I read about Lowton screams Brayford replacement. A marauding right back who can play in midfield or a centre back if needed.

It would make no sense to replace Shackell with Brayford - we'd miss Shack's height too much.

Even if it's true and Brayford goes, there's no need to get upset. If Lowton is as good as the Blades' fans think and we can use the rest of the cash to get a real goalscorer the team could easily be better.

Maybe not, could be more for cover, he can play def midfield, so that's Brayford, Naylor and Lowton right back, Naylor, brayford, shackell, Buxton and OB at centre back, Hendrick, Bryson and Lowton at midfield, could pave the way for Bailey to leave

He's a midfielder so why would Brayford leave !

Because of this bit

"Members of the Championship club’s backroom staff were regular visitors to Bramall Lane last season and are believed to have submitted a glowing report of the right-back’s qualities to manager Nigel Clough."

True - but it looks like he is a right back that can play midfield, TBH honest I read the 1 st couple of lines and though Right back. It says he is a right back, but doesn't say he is a midfielder, just he played there, Depends how you read into it

What about the other bit Hucknall m8 re - partnership with Lee Williamson in Sheff Us midfield.

I think that means that Williamson was on the right side of the Sheffield midfield and Lowton linked up well with him from right back, ie played the overlap well.

Williamson plays RM and Lowton plays RB so that would be the partnership they were referring to. Much like Brayford's partnership with Cywka 2 seasons ago.

Obviously this can ONLY mean Brayford's on his way. Think of the alternatives:

1. Brayford's injury prone

2. He could be switching to CB now Barks is out

3. We need a cover RB as Naylor is a CB and Greenies on the way out.

Doesnt neccesarilly mean Brayford or Shackell's on the way out.

Although almost all of that was wishful thinking.

If he spent some time out at Ferencvaros, I wonder if that while Shorty was manager out there. If so you'd hope we would have a head start over Jewell.

I hope we're not losing Brayford - but I agree with others that if we are, then 2.5m and this lad would soften the blow
