Glen Hoddle and Fergie JNR to fight it out for the forest job, I suspect the one that wins will be the one that doesn't get the job. 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

NOTTINGHAM Forest today find themselves back at square one in their search for a new manager, after Mick McCarthy last night turned down the job.

The former Wolves boss had been the Al Hasawi family's number one choice for the role ever since they completed their takeover of the club.

And McCarthy himself arrived for face-to-face talks yesterday hoping to put pen to paper on a deal to become the Reds new manager. But it is understood that McCarthy backed out after failing to see eye to eye with the club hierarchy after discussing their plans for the future in more depth.

McCarthy had sought reassurances that he would have autonomy when it came to the management of the club and their activity in the transfer market.

And Forest were active in that area for the first time since the takeover last night, as the club agreed a £2.3m deal to sell Chris Gunter to Reading. The full-back will undergo a medical today.

If the deal goes through it will leave the Reds without a single experienced defender in their squad, with the new season barely a month away.

And, with their first choice having walked away, Forest's owners will now restart their search for a manager – and turn their attention to Glenn Hoddle and Darren Ferguson.

Former England manager Hoddle is thought to have already held informal talks with Forest on Sunday and will now be asked to attend a more formal interview over the next 24 hours.

Peterborough's Ferguson has long been second on Forest's shortlist behind McCarthy and remains strong candidate for the job.

Ferguson, who has guided Posh to three promotions, has a release clause of £1.5m in his contract.

But new Reds owner Abdulaziz Al Hasawi has said that the club would not balk at paying compensation for the right man if it was necessary.

"We could pay compensation if the package was right and the person had a strong background," he said.

"My brother, Fawaz, is very experienced in this area and, if he likes them, we could make a decision on that."

Peterborough had previously threatened to report Gianni Paladini, the former QPR chairman, to the Football League for an alleged illegal approach made to Ferguson, supposedly on behalf of Forest.

But Forest may now attempt to speak to Ferguson through official channels.

The Al Hasawi family also explored the possibility of appointing Stuart Pearce as manager, which would have been a hugely popular move with supporters.

But his commitments with the Great Britain team at the London Olympics ruled him out as a candidate, as he would not be able to take on the City Ground role until next month.

Roy Keane is also an outside contender to replace Steve Cotterill, who was sacked last week.

It seems to me that these new owners either want success too quickly and the managers to be have said, 'wait a minute, that's not possible.Lets be realistic here' and 'I could end up with a bad rep here' or this is all a front and they're up to some sort of evil shanaigans. And that's fine by me. I reckon the owners are putting managers off with the 'give these kuwaite lads a go - if you don't like them, drop them, I dare you'. Thing is, managers can't work like that, certainly not your Billy Davies' of this world, it's too high a pressure job to be pi55ing about with players you haven't picked yourelf. Sounds like they have swapped their accuisitions panel with, well another one..perhaps less knowledgeable to boot.

Oh dear.... 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
