Derby and Kilmarnock agree fee to transfer Craig Bryson

BBC Scotland Bryson made his full Scotland debut against the Faroe Islands in November

Kilmarnock have agreed a £450,000 deal to sell their captain Craig Bryson to Championship club Derby County.

The Scotland midfielder, 24, is expected to sign a three-year contract with the Rams once he passes a medical.

BBC Scotland understands the Rugby Park club will receive an initial transfer fee of £350,000 and a further sum of about £100,000 based on appearances.

Bryson, who played 135 games for Killie, was under contract there until the summer of 2013.

He was the subject of a couple of bids from Hearts last summer, but Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston rejected the offers from their Scottish Premier League rivals.

The midfielder joined Kilmarnock from Clyde in 2007 and made his Scotland debut as a substitute against the Faroe Islands in November.

Derby are aiming for a double raid on Scotland's top flight, although their attempt to sign Aberdeen and Scotland striker Chris Maguire has not yet been completed because of the Dons' compensation demand for the 22-year-old.

Bryson's departure from Rugby Park follows that of defender Frazer Wright - he joined SPL side St Johnstone on freedom of contract.

This looks like a quality addition to the squad and he ought to be a real bargain at that price. He was one of the key players of Kilmarnock over the last couple of years, not only through his leadership qualities as their team captain, but also with his driving runs from midfield. They were holding on to fourth spot in the SPL earlier this season before they sold Sammon (unfortunately not to us) and Bryson's quality has got him into the Scotland national team already. He started out as a forward at Clyde, but was converted into a midfielder while at Kilmarnock. When he was a youngster, he was on trial here under Billy Davies as we know. He was also watched by Spurs as well as Celtic.

He was on the verge of a move to Hearts in last summers transfer window, Kilmarnock coach Sandy Clark was comparing him to his former teammate and Hearts legend Gary Mackay, for his technique and box to box playing style

Craig will bring goals from the middle of the park, that's for sure," he said. "He's still a young player and, without any shadow of a doubt, he's Kilmarnock's best player. The potential is incredible for him because he could really go on and become top class. He does get into the box and get goals but he likes the ball to feet as well. He's very good at playing the final pass to create scoring opportunities

I'd describe him as being like Gary Mackay, maybe because I played with Gary. Paul Hartley in his prime was a bit more direct and pacy than Craig, who is more of a footballer in central midfield. His technique, football ability and vision are his best qualities.

Craig won't have any problems if he goes to Hearts. He's got loads of enthusiasm. He will give it his best shot wherever he goes .

Kevin Kyle, a Hearts player who was hoping Bryson joined him at Hearts last summer had this to say

"He is a cracking little player. Kilmarnock will be desperate to hold on to him because he is probably their most prized asset right now and it may be difficult to lure him away, but if Jim could get him it would be a magnificent coup and it would benefit Hearts enormously. The transfer market is a tricky thing but Jim has plenty experience of it and I am sure the owners of the club will try and help him the best they can."

He has been talked about in Scottish football for the last season or two and rightly so because he is a fantastic little midfielder. He has great energy and he is a box to box player, more of an attacker than a defender but he can certainly defend as well. He has got class and skill and ability and he has a great range of passing," said Kyle.

and there is more

He was considered as one of the players of the season this year in Scotland, seems like he has been continued to improve this year, and looks like we may well have beaten off some Championship competition for him too.

A Finnish revolution swept over Rugby Park last year.

In came the likes of Alexei Eremenko, Ben Gordon and a number of other loan signings from down south. But it was the development of one of Kilmarnock's homegrown players that had a huge impact on their rise to the top six this campaign.

The regular armchair fan was introduced to Bryson in January 2006 when all eyes were on Roy Keane's debut for Celtic at Broadwood in the Scottish Cup. A 19-year-old from Rutherglen outshone the Republic of Ireland International and helped Clyde towards a 2-1 Cup upset by scoring the second goal.

Bryson had an excellent game against Celtic's high-earners and soon became one of the hottest prospects in the Scottish Football League. It was only a matter of time before an SPL club came calling and Kilmarnock swooped to sign the midfielder in 2007.

Bryson finally cemented his place in the Kilmarnock first team under Jim Jefferies in mid-2008 and since then, has been a regular feature in the side and a fans favourite at Rugby Park. Since his arrival last summer, Mixu Paateleinan has, arguably, had a bigger impact on his career than any manager he'll have played under.

Mixu swapped Bryson's engine for his ability to retain possession and he soon became one of the most impressive central midfielders in the SPL. The 24-year-old missed just five games and built a strong partnership with Liam Kelly and Eremenko, as the three complemented each other in the middle of the park.

Kilmarnock enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in recent years and Mixu's impact as manager did not go unnoticed at the recent SPL awards dinner. Bryson played an integral part in the Killie setup that swapped the relegation battle last season, where they were 90 minutes away from going down, to challenging for Europe in a superb seven months under the Finnish coach.

Bryson made his 100th appearance in a Kilmarnock shirt this season and has gone on to captain the side this term. He was included in Craig Levein's Scotland squad for the first time and made his debut for the national team against the Faroe Islands at Pittodrie in which he played the second-half.

Even against Rangers and Celtic where most players struggle to impose themselves, Bryson turned in some sparkling performances especially in the 3-2 defeat to Rangers at Rugby Park in December.

Having rejected bids from Hearts in January, Bryson's future is still in doubt at Rugby Park even though he's committed until 2013. The Ayrshire club though should be prepared for more bids for their talented number seven, with a host of Championship sides keen to secure his signature

Derby have agreed a fee with Kilmarnock for midfielder Craig Bryson.

The Rams have been chasing Bryson all summer and they have now agreed a deal in the region of £400,000 for the 24-year-old.

Bryson is set for talks and a medical at Pride Park next week after Kilmarnock reluctantly agreed to let him move on.

Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston admitted they could not stand in his way after receiving a suitable offer from Derby.

"We were reluctant to sell Craig but he wanted to go," said Johnston.

"He feels it will benefit his career. He's been a very good servant to Kilmarnock so when Derby County reached our asking price we felt it was only fair to let him go."
