I don't think it's the established players we've missed out on. £8-12 million is the going rate for a top Championship player these days, so it's no surprise that we are staying away from the table.

The wallet has been kept firmly shut and for good reason. There is simply no value in the market right now. As highly rated as he is, when you have Matt Ritchie going for £12 million, it makes £4 million for Almen Abdi look like the deal of the century.

What's disappointing for me is that we haven't gambled as yet. We haven't taken a chance on a young player from the lower leagues, plucked someone from a Premier League academy or even put all our eggs in an exotic foreign basket. 

The likes of O'Dowda, Cousins, Canos and Irvine - those are the types of signings we'll probably be kicking ourselves over. Young players that are largely unproven or unknown but could still grow and develop into top Championship players and possibly go even further.
