Overlapping and underlapping

Derby have had many problems this season trying to create clear chances against teams who retreated in 2 banks of 4 stretched across the width of the penalty box. We've tried shooting from long distance and the wingers and full backs putting aerial crosses into a packed box. Neither has tactic worked so far.

Today we managed to score 2 goals form crosses, one from an overlap and one from an underlap. What is an underlap? I hear you cry.

Our first goal put Warnock into an overlapping position similar to one found by Christie and Forsyth this season on several occasions. This time Martin delayed his run into the box as if was going to look for a pull back, when he did make his move both the centre back and left back went with him, leaving a gap behind for Johnson. Without a dominant aerial presence we need to pick out players rather than just place it in an area.

Our second goal was a lovely underlap, a run inside the opposition fullback and winger to enable Ince (who was attacking from a full back position with Warnock wider and ahead of him) to receive the ball inside the box for either an angled shot or in this case a sidefooted cross across the face of goal. This is a tactic that Brayford used on accasion when playing with Coutts and could work well for us again against packed defences with either a winger or full back penetrating the opposition penalty area.
