Sitting here at home, bored stiff, I (half an hour ago) chucked the Memsahib £3 and told her to get me a scratchcard from the shop (a rarity, I can tell you - I might buy one a month).

Won £100, but the difference is, it's going into my casino fund.

That's the first time Ever, I've heard of anyone winning more than a free go on a card!

Needless to say, I did not buy 33 more scratchcards to celebrate.

Not saying that at all, I was asking Rammyboy to define what he meant by loyal fans. His reply was to compare our attendances with Boro and what I was getting at is all clubs support goes up and down based on the football played, results and signings. We as a club are no more loyal than any other club then.

Individuals have personal circumstances as to why they didn't attend games but if you look above we lost 10k on average fans from the Prem season at home to Nigel's final season. Soon as he left they shot back up, away attendances were as low as 200 under Nigel, now we're taking thousands.

All this we're more loyal than other clubs because we're getting decent crowds now is blowing sunshine up our arses, my take on loyalty in football is staying loyal to one club. Not going out buying a Chelsea shirt one minute and Man City the next. Fans talk about loyalty with fans or managers when they leave and then use the loyalty thing to bash other clubs on attendances, makes no sense to me and that's why I asked Rammyboy to define loyal.

But rammyboys point was that we have a more loyal fan base attending games than boro, which in terms of average attendance over the last 10 years is true.

Derby are top of the average attendances over the past 10 years, which does mean we have more loyal fan base in terms of numbers than anyone else in the division last season, that's not blowing sunshine up our arses it facts.

Of course it doesn't mean we have more loyal fans as individuals, and our away attendances were poor under clough, but that was down to the brand of football rather than anything else,  watching the game still has to be fun.

Having more doesn't make us more loyal, doesn't work like that. Take Wigan for example, it's a rugby town 20 miles down the road from Man Utd, Man City, are those that go less loyal than us because there are fewer of them?

No as I said, individually no they are not, but do Wigan have more loyal supporters collectively than Derby.....no they don't. Wigan is a rugby town, but they don't play the same day at home as the football team I don't think, so are you saying that the average person living there probably has more loyalty towards egg chasing than football?

You're kind of agreeing there in the first sentence but just because there is more of us doesn't make us more loyal and that's what I'm getting at.

If you have one plate of pasta with a pinch of salt in and another plate of pasta with a handful of salt in, one will be more salty  than the other but it doesn't work like that with this.

Have we got more fans than Wigan? yes. Are we more loyal? no and we're blowing smokey sunshine up our arses if we're claiming to be.

We do however have a very good support in numbers compared to the rest of the league, but when you dig deeper other factors work in our favour for those numbers. Our location, middle of the country, a number of clubs within an hour or two. We also have rivalry with Forest and Wednesday, Leeds and recently Leicester that boosted the numbers over recent years.

Now take Boro for example, a Tuesday night is a right trek for most of the league, they have no rivalry up there with Sunderland and Newcastle in the Prem.

Wigan, they have both Manchester clubs and Liverpool with huge support that took big followings in the Prem to boost numbers.

Waaaay off topic but I'm right you know I am. Quantity yes, quality on par with the rest.

I think I get it. So Plymouth fans could technically be classed as some of the most loyal fans. Even if they just take 20 people to a match against Hartlepool on a Tuesday night, those 20 fans could be considered the most loyal in the country.

It's easy to support derby. It's a lot harder to support other clubs. On the other hand, we can't help it that our club is easy to support  I could move to the Shetlands and come back for every home game to prove my loyalty, but that would be a bit daft

In terms of the fluctuating quantities, the key thing to look at is the core support. The least support we've had even during the worst times. What was the figure you gave? About 24,000? Not sure what our lowest away attendance has been. That's the hardcore fans that come during thick or thin, and that's a pretty huge, loyal fan base, compared with what most other clubs have had during the thin times.

Exactly.

Take DEL for example with his loyal username, I'm not knocking him at all, let me get that out there first. I don't consider him to be more loyal than say TamworthRam who gets in 6 or 7 away games.

Both have stayed loyal to Derby for years, they haven't pissed off to go and support Man Utd when times were tough.

DEL's circumstances allow him to get to all these games, where as others have work, family etc. that stop them getting to games.

I really hate this we're loyal fans rubbish. Needs to go in the bin with attendance arguments and legend titles being given out so easily,

I'm not going either. Wouldn't it be nice to be loyal like the rest of our legendary support?

I don't like the internal competition to prove loyalty either. I have a season ticket, but I can never afford away games other than occasionally some of the local ones and once or twice a random trip out the city. None of us drive so it's the horrendous train fares for us. It's a constant oneupmanship, I have a season ticket and yet that's not 'loyal' enough according to some.

I know Eddie's 'half fan' thing is a joke at this stage but the same accusation gets thrown about by some when someone can't afford a game or they disagree with something someone has said or they've other commitments.

It's a pointless word 'loyalty' because as this thread proves, it means different things to different people.

Point is, although the definition of loyalty might mean different things to different people, we do have an incredibly strong fan base. It's commented on by other fans, incoming players, and it's backed up by stats. We're probably lucky due to geography, and not having any competing sports or clubs in the same city, but we can't help that. Whether you define that fan are as any more or less loyal than any other fans us up to you. But it can't be denied that our fan base is stronger than most, and the envy of many other clubs.
