I tend to prefer comedic acting or general wittiness on TV/Radio to someone standing there bombarding me with jokes for 2 hours.

For example, I'm not a huge fan of Peter Kay as stand up but I used to love phoenix nights and his new Car Share series. Jeremy Hardy on the Radio 4 News Quiz is probably the person I laugh at most consistently.

Stand up:

Bill Hicks

George Carlin

Dave Allen

Jon Richardson

Tim Vine

The first 2 go beyond merely being funny and are basically philosophers.

Comedy Characters:

Alan Partridge

Del Boy and Rodney

Mark Corrigan and Jeremy Usborne

David Brent

Max and Paddy

Stewart Francis, Frank Skinner, Jim Jefferies,  Michael Winslow and Bill Hicks.

The trouble with this type of question is the next day you'd pick a different 5, in my case always keeping Bill Hicks.

For anyone who doesn't know, Michael Winslow was the one who did all the voices and sound effects in the Police Academy films.

I had the privilege of seeing his stand up set in a small comedy club a few years ago, it's even more impressive to see him close up and live, jaw dropping doesn't do him justice!
