Global TV viewing figures

The incredible global appeal of all four teams means that fans will be watching in just about every country around the world. The Premier League contest is the more popular, with as many as 700 million viewers - but then it is being screened in nearly four times as many countries.

Liverpool vs Manchester United (El Vitriol): 600-700million

Barcelona vs Real Madrid (El Clasico): 400-500million

Countries broadcast

El Vitriol 212 v 56 El Clasico

It's all estimates anyway as the article was written before both games even kick off but the Premier League is the most watched league around the world and shown in more countries, would not surprise me one bit that Man Utd v Liverpool would attract more. Man Utd and Liverpool are huge in Asia, Real Madrid and Barca's hipsters not so many.

Some ex-Warsaw pact countries have rivalries based on the persecution of one oraganisation and the favouring of another by the regime. They can be quite viscous. That few people watch them on the telly doesn't detract from the hostility.

As someone has already suggested, see also AEK v Olympiakos. They even manage to have punch ups at the water polo.

El Classico is hype.

Viscous? Having a thick, sticky consistency between solid and liquid? Ah you mean viscious. Sorry I'm having a pedantic day
