A utility defender who can cover CB and RB and a winger to take us up to 4 so we can change both per game in like for like switches if our system is working (much like last year). I would be happy with Bennett playing this role however I think its clear that both he and Mac feel he needs a loan spell for guaranteed minutes.

I think we need a really good CB still to be able to fight for the promotion.

I've heard of a pair that'd available for the Carlisle game. They're names are Keogh and Buxton, I heard good things, made a good back pairing in a promotion push last season from all reports.

That pair also got bullied for the majority of the game by that well-known hitman Alex Revell.

One game, at the start of the season, with Buxton having an injury cloud over him and Keogh needing a bit of a confidence boost.

Odd things happen on first games, they are still very good players and it would be unfair to replace either of them at this point. We probably need a bit more depth there, but outright replacing either, particularly Keogh, would be bizarre and only serve to destroy what confidence he has left. Keogh has been a good for us, and there's no need to get overly emotional about how last season ended. He needs his confidence back and when he gets it (a clean sheet on opening day would have done wonders), he'll be the asset he always was.

Speaking of which, fun fact: That clean sheet was our first opening day clean sheet in 12 years.

I don't think it's a case with either. Most will know I wasn't happy with Buxton (yes, blasphemy) for quite a part of last season, and we all know a number of fans were not happy with Keogh both at the start and the end of the season (I was not one of those). I just think we can do better than both of them, and if we can, then we should look to do that - not just settle. That's not saying I don't rate either of them, as they clearly like playing together and do a decent job. But far too many times we look all over the place from balls into our box. That, admittedly, could be as much the fullbacks and/or midfield's fault but unfortunately, the blame tends to land at the feet of the centre backs.

Considering Buxton hadn't trained for two weeks, and a lot of pressure on Keogh after Wembley and some uncertain preseason performances, I thought it was a pretty solid performance, if not spectacular. Just the confidence boost everybody needed, but none more so than Keogh.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Whitbread start vs. Carlisle while we hunt for another prem loan CB.

Another winger please, we sorely lacked width on Saturday, while I like both Russell and Dawkins, they can't play together when they both like to cut inside, especially when teams will inevitably come to frustrate us and nick a goal. Rotherham just packed the centre of the pitch and it was all too comfortable for them.

That's not a problem - we all make mistakes.

I want better.

Would tend to agree with this. I love the honesty, endeavour and spirit with which Keogh and Bucko play week in week out and no doubting they are good footballers - to a point. We shipped more goals then any of the top 6 sides last time around and I can't see what's improved for this season, so on that basis we will need better quality to go one better this time around. It might be that as a team we defend better this season and maybe Grant will stop a few more also improving our overall goals against tally. For now though I'm still not convinced that we have the rock solid central defence, or at least the defensive options, that we need for automatics.

4 tables say a very different story:

Championship table since McClaren took over:

1 Leicester City 2.19

2 Derby County 2.03

3 Burnley 1.94

4 Brighton and Hove A 1.64

5 Wigan Athletic 1.63

6 Queens Park Rangers 1.54

7 Blackburn Rovers 1.53

8 Middlesbrough 1.53

9 Bolton Wanderers 1.50

10 Ipswich Town 1.50

11 Bournemouth 1.47

12 Reading 1.44

13 Sheffield Wednesday 1.30

14 Nottingham Forest 1.28

15 Charlton Athletic 1.22

16 Leeds United 1.19

17 Watford 1.17

18 Huddersfield Town 1.08

19 Millwall 1.03

20 Doncaster Rovers 0.95

21 Barnsley 0.94

22 Birmingham City 0.94

23 Yeovil Town 0.89

24 Blackpool 0.75

Goals scored per game since McClaren took over:

1 Derby County 1.83

2 Leicester City 1.83

3 Reading 1.56

4 Blackburn Rovers 1.50

5 Bournemouth 1.50

6 Watford 1.50

7 Burnley 1.47

8 Sheffield Wednesday 1.46

9 Bolton Wanderers 1.44

10 Nottingham Forest 1.42

11 Leeds United 1.39

12 Middlesbrough 1.36

13 Queens Park Rangers 1.35

14 Wigan Athletic 1.29

15 Birmingham City 1.28

16 Huddersfield Town 1.28

17 Brighton and Hove A 1.25

18 Ipswich Town 1.19

19 Yeovil Town 1.08

20 Millwall 1.00

21 Barnsley 0.92

22 Charlton Athletic 0.89

23 Doncaster Rovers 0.81

24 Blackpool 0.69

Finally, the key here, goals conceded per game since McClaren took over:

1 Brighton and Hove A 0.86

2 Burnley 0.86

3 Leicester City 0.92

4 Middlesbrough 0.92

5 Derby County 0.97

6 Wigan Athletic 1.03

7 Ipswich Town 1.11

8 Queens Park Rangers 1.14

9 Bolton Wanderers 1.19

10 Bournemouth 1.22

11 Charlton Athletic 1.27

12 Reading 1.33

13 Sheffield Wednesday 1.35

14 Blackburn Rovers 1.42

15 Barnsley 1.44

16 Nottingham Forest 1.50

17 Watford 1.50

18 Millwall 1.56

19 Doncaster Rovers 1.57

20 Blackpool 1.58

21 Huddersfield Town 1.58

22 Leeds United 1.58

23 Birmingham City 1.69

24 Yeovil Town 1.69

Which gives the combined as:

1 Leicester City 0.92

2 Derby County 0.86

3 Burnley 0.61

4 Middlesbrough 0.44

5 Brighton and Hove A 0.39

6 Bournemouth 0.28

7 Wigan Athletic 0.26

8 Bolton Wanderers 0.25

9 Reading 0.22

10 Queens Park Rangers 0.22

11 Sheffield Wednesday 0.11

12 Blackburn Rovers 0.08

13 Ipswich Town 0.08

14 Watford 0.00

15 Nottingham Forest -0.08

16 Leeds United -0.19

17 Huddersfield Town -0.31

18 Charlton Athletic -0.38

19 Birmingham City -0.42

20 Barnsley -0.53

21 Millwall -0.56

22 Yeovil Town -0.61

23 Doncaster Rovers -0.76

24 Blackpool -0.89

Which tells the real story. With the attacking style of the side in mind (which clearly got results under McClaren, as shown by being 2nd on points per game since he took over) that being 5th for goals conceded per game isn't really that big a deal. Consider the following: The difference between ourselves in 5th for the goals conceded per game and Brighton atop the list, where we saw a difference of 0.11 goals per game conceded, which across a season is about 5 goals. Then consider the gap of 0.25 goal difference per game between us and Burnley on the last table, which is around 11-12 goals across a season, that tells the really story of where we were at.

Yes, we could tighten up at the back at times, but a lot of the situation is around how we play our football, not just how good the defense is. They did their job last season, and to complain that they "weren't good enough" is ridiculous when they clearly were good enough for 36 games under McClaren last season.

Yes, signing players is exciting, but there's no point throwing the baby out with the bathwater here. Our centrehalf pairing know eachother well, and both have shown their quality over a number of seasons at this level, one of whom is our captain, who is still seemingly struggling a bit for confidence. Once he's got it all back I'm sure he'll be great again.

Thanks for the stats Albert - honestly, I do enjoy them. I guess my point is that whilst I agree that both have served us well and are good Championship defenders, I can't help but feel we still need a little more in that department. Put another way, if we reach the promised land then most of our first team would be comfortable and good enough to play at that level - certainly midfield, (some) of the strikers/ wide players and the goalie. But the centre backs? No way IMO. So we have premiership quality elsewhere and I believe we may need that now at CB to achieve the aim of promotion. Baby out with the bath water? No. A premiership loan to help us be that little bit tougher? Yes.
