The Muslim Premier League

I would say the same if stuff like this didn't have an impact on ability, but it does.

This. I personally wouldn't like a Derby player fasting for 18 hours a day the week before a game. Not good for nutrition, muscles, etc. and bound to have an effect on performance.

Quite refreshing to see a big-time footballer like Demba Ba address this though, saying he'd be OK with being dropped because of this. There's too many players out there with a sense of entitlement.

Tell you who I feel sorry for...the ladyboys, how hard must it be to get into football with a willy and boobs?

Ladyboy Premier League, BBC documentary needed, if they won't do it I bet channel 4 will.

Well Andy Reid ain't done that bad tbf.

The flip side to the Demba Ba comment being that he knows what is expected of him when he signs his £100k a week contract and if he can't stick to that contract then maybe he should think about getting another job that is more flexible around his religion.

Wonder how it would go down if I said 'going to get pissed tonight and if it is going to affect my work tomorrow then I won't bother coming in'

Except he said he beleives he's perfectly capable of playing to a high ability even when fasting... I think the article noted a coupla years back that on the first week of Ramadan both Ba and Cisse had scored for Newcastle...

They were certainly hungry for goals one would say

The quote you said was something along the lines of 'if its affecting my game don't pick me' which would lead me to think that he realises that fasting could have an effect on his game

He said both in the same quote... It was:

Ba, 28, admits he has had some issues with managers about Ramadan, but says he has been steadfast.

"Every time I had a manager that was not happy with it, I've said: 'Listen, I'll do it. If my performance is still good, I'll keep playing; if it's bad you drop me on the bench, that's it.'"

Newcastle would have known about this before they signed him, so if it was an issue, they didnt have to give him a contract.

Im sure the performance will be effected by it, but you also have the up side where you know they wont be down a casino, or nightclub in the early hours of the morning getting battered.

Depends on the religion. In some religions, the whole point is to make your kids believe. You don't want to go to hell, do you? If that's your belief, that's your reality. You're doing your duty by making your kids believe, doing everyone a favour in the process. It all looks ridiculous by our standards, but by their standards, a hell of a lot of stuff we do is crazy....

Anyway, as for the footie and religion, being Muslim has a lot to do with it, as mentioned above. Hadn't thought about Halal meat before but Ramadan must affect players. No food or drink from sunset to sunrise? That must be agony if you're a professional athlete.

Professional athletes can get dispensation to do the whole Ramadan thing at a more convenient time. Whether meat is Halal or not has little to do with its suitability. The belief is that the fasting during daylight hours cleanses the body (of which there is some justification) and makes them think about people worse off than themselves who may be hungry for much more than the 40 days of Ramadan. That can't be a bad thing either.

The only player that I can remember stopping playing because of his religious beliefs was the Wolves player Peter Knowles who became a Jehovah's Witness - ruddy good player too.

So in summary:-

Demba Ba has a job where he he only has to work 9 months a year.

In those 9 months he probably has to work 2 or 3 hours a day for 5 days a week.

However, for 1 of those 9 months he has to disappear to play in the African Cup of Nations, leaving 8 months.

Out of those remaining 8 months he spends 1 month starving himself and admits he not be fit to play.

You've got to feel for these footballers, its a bloody tough life. I can see why they now feel the need to show a programme about footballers feeling suicidal when they retire.
