Alex Baptiste

DERBY County are monitoring Alex Baptiste’s situation at Blackpool.

The 27-year-old defender is out of contract in the summer and there is likely to be plenty of competition for his signature.

Stoke City, Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers were all linked with a £1m move for him during the January transfer window.

Baptiste can also play at full-back and Derby are thinking about their defensive options for next season.

They will start the 2013-14 campaign without two of their recognised central defenders, Shaun Barker and Mark O’Brien.

Barker is recovering from the serious knee injury that has kept him out since March last year and he is expected to return around October time, while O’Brien has recently undergone knee surgery and he will be out for between four and six months.

There is also likely to be renewed speculation over John Brayford’s future at the club, as there was in January. Brayford has a year remaining on his contract after this season.

Baptiste, born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, came through the youth system at Mansfield Town, where he played alongside Rams defender Jake Buxton.

He made nearly 200 appearances for Mansfield and had a brief loan spell at Burton Albion under Nigel Clough before he signed for Blackpool in July 2008.

He helped Blackpool to win promotion to the Premier League in 2010. His 187 games for the club include 43 this season.

Derby have dismissed a report that they are weighing up a summer move for Motherwell’s 25-year-old winger Chris Humphrey, who will be out of contract.

I know this was on another thread but did not see one on here - could be a good option, knows people and is from the area - other clubs will doubtless be in for him but it only normally gets into the DET if it is a solid possibility. Could be a Richard Keogh type - he had other (seemingly better) options according to the press but they talked him into it....

With the injury situation and the fact that Brayford only has a year left on his contract, I can see us lining up defensively

Brayford - keogh - baptiste - Forsyth

and then In jan barker will return and Brayford will be sold, leaving us with

baptiste - keogh - barker - Forsyth

Unless we extend Brayfords contract and the club are in talks to do just that

Fielding

Brayford Keogh Baptiste Forsyth

Playoff standard back 5. You have Freeman, Buxton, Oconnor, Gjokak, Hoganson ready to step in.

January will be big for our defence....

1. Will Barker be fully fit and importantly good enough to step straight in.

2. Will Brayford sign a new contract.

3. If not will Brayford be sold to get funds instead of going on a free.

4. Will Forsyth actually be good enough consistently. May we need a new left back. (im a bit suspect on Forysth but it seems Clough and Rush really rate him)

We could easily find it changing to:

Fielding

Baptiste Keogh Buxton Forsyth

If Barker isnt ready and Brayford leaves as a worst case scenario.

If you look at how we have conceded goals this season, we have conceded too many from crosses/corners/free kicks, which would point to a stronger presence in the air, is Baptiste that type of player, I don't think he is, is he better than Buxton? Again I don't think he is. IMHO he is no better than what we have already.
