Q and A with Sam rush

Will it be like a Papal visit with a fully armoured golf buggy to get him from one pub to the next?

Will there be red carpets and strange waving techniques?

Will anyone be arranging for a small child to step forward to present him with a bouquet at each venue?

Oooh We've had nothing like this since Stacey Solomon turned on the christmas lights.

Ask to see his blueprint/routemap of the club's entry back into the Premiership with the current resources and the current annual levels of loss. I seem to remember Trevor Francis was sacked by Simon Jordan when obviously inadequately attempting to answer the first part of the question.

He is a man, I consider to have a good library of in depth football knowledge! For instance, what goes on behind the scenes at successful football clubs and what goes on at unsuccessful football clubs and at the minute we are definitely the latter. I want him to use that experience for the good of our club, I don't want him shying away from decisions or being happy with mediocrity - this is effectively his club now, he is acting chairman as far as decisions go that the fans will see and hear! I've already said this kind of job is huge, but hard...

As Ramnut and EKR have both said, ask him and really ASK HIM what WILL he achieve of significance in the next 12 months that we couldn't of done without him.

I think for a lot of Derby fans the 'year on year improvement' and the 'year on year growth' is coming to an end, we need significant and notable improvement both on and off the pitch - standards have slipped and interest has dropped because of that, we need to get the fans back on side and back in the stands, how he goes about that isn't a hard question.. It's not, we need significant belief and noise to be shown from the club, at the minute and I could be wrong but no one at the club is expecting to be a premier league player/manager/coach/club owner/club investor any time soon! We can sit and wait for Clough to grow a few young players into capable match winners but people will grow tired of that, people have grown tired of that...

If Forest start doing well, the fans will not be happy - seems small minded but for me it's important, I can't bare to watch us linger while they're in the top 6... And that alone will cause unrest for a lot of fans!

I'd be really keen to find out how quickly he's got settled into the commercial side of things.

Is demand based pricing working? With the dynamic pricing model in place for almost a full season. Does the club now know the optimum price it should be charging in order to attract more floating fans or returnees? What is being done to target that group.

We have fantastic facilities at Derby and attendances in the top 6 in the division, So with the club announcing that we have one of the lowest yields from ticket sales in the championship, what is being done to maximise and increase our revenue from ticket sales as well as that how does our revenue from Corporate sales compare to other clubs with similar facilities?

Is there a season ticket sold figures that will have either a negative or a positive impact on the managers transfer and wage budget for next season? What are those figures in both cases?

If any of those are asked I'd be mightily obliged.

I love the way these 'marketing' guys write their own histories....

Tim Hinchey was named Colorado Rapids President on December 12, 2011 having joined the Rapids as Chief Marketing Officer in November 2010.Before coming to Colorado, Hinchey served as the Vice President of Commercial for English Football League Championship side Derby County for the last three years.

While at Derby County, he oversaw a radical change in the club’s commercial approach, introducing a number of innovative ideas and policies unique to English football that have brought great success and results ‘off the field’.

The Rams broke new ground by becoming the first club to secure a ‘Season Presenting Partner’ when telecoms firm Buymobilephones.net signed up for the 2008/9 season, a relationship which has since grown to become Derby County’s first shirt sponsor through 2013. Under his leadership, the Rams more than doubled their sponsorship revenue and saw record sales figures for corporate hospitality.

First shirt sponsor? Evidently something got lost in translation.

Maybe that should read, first team shirt sponsor?

Tom Glick will take up his position as chief commercial and operating officer with the Premier League champions in August.

A quick glance at his impressive CV shows exactly why City were attracted to him – with a record of doubling Derby County’s commercial revenue since 2008 and increasing season ticket sales at Pride Park by 20 per cent despite their relegation to the Championship. His specialist ability to draw in crowds has seen him work with NBA side the New Jersey Nets, and set record attendances with two minor league baseball teams the Sacramento River Cats and the Lansing Lugnuts.

Ok.....

Published accounts show commercial revenue as follows:

2005 5.8m

2006 5.4m

2007 5.9m

2008 8.3m

2009 8.1m

2010 7.5m

And in 2011....

Match receipts fell almost £800,000 from £6.3m to around £5.5m. Sponsorship and advertising was down slightly to around £2.1m as was merchandising to around £1.5m. Commercial activities were up from £2.9m to just over £3m.

So....

Derby's overll commercial revenue went down after 2008.

The biggest single factor affecting commercial revenue was promotion to the premier league rather than any wizardry by these two.

Success on the field led to commercial success off the field.

Commercial revenue then declined after relegation; a fact which might not have been apparent according the the glowing references that hinchey and glick wrote for themselves.

These marketing shysters spin a good yarn.

Can't wait to read Sam Rush's self-proclaimed positive back history after he has moved on in due course.

Just to add more detail to Ramnut's post, this is the split from 05/06 to 11/12 (and given in that order).I've added 11/12 and ignored 04/05:-

Match Receipts   £4.923m/£6.66m/£8.057m/£8.266m/£6.319m/£5.551m/£5.626m

Sponsorship&Advertising   £1.229m/£1.072m/£1.738m/£2.37m/£2.252m/£2.087m/£2m

TV   £1.003m/£1.339m/£32.16m/£14.848m/£15.984m/£5.188m/£4.963m

Commercial Activities  £2.225m/£2.783m/£4.086m/£3.364m/£2.915m/£3.022m/£2.653m

Programme sales &related activities  £182k/£272k/£381k/£141k/£227k/£221k/£212k

Merchandising   £1.373m/£1.383m/£1.807m/£1.703m/£1.578m/£1.461m/£1.217m

Other  £420k/£398k/£329k/£560k/£479k/£591k/£605k

As extracted from published accounts.

I've also mentioned before that we don't know if admin expenses relevant to commercial activities have increased over the period (i.e the cost of increasing revenues).

Having heard Rush speak a couple of times now, I'm less inclined to go this, although I am within boo-ing distance of the Flowerpot, so I might let curiosity get the better of me.

I imagine his 7pm engagements will be much calmer affairs than his 9pm slots, by the time they finish at 10:30pm I can imagine things getting lairy.

Anyone want to place a bet that this is an unmitigated disaster? Talking to angry fans in the Toyota Suite of PPS at 6pm is bad enough (in terms of how much aggressive idiotic nonsense certain fans felt the need to spout). Add several pints of beer and  by 10pm I can see glasses flying.

Is he very brave or very stupid?

If its anything like the last Q & A I attended where Mr Rush was speaking I won't bother. We were told not to record or quote anything at all and apart from his love of Rugby and Arsenal not too much to report. Not that we're allowed, but I thought his comments about Will were very guarded and he was pretty uncomfortable.

Now this isn't my chosen field at all. I only wandered in here to show how the facts seem to be twisted by the spin doctors.

So taking Ramblurs accounts figures.......

Match Receipts   £4.923m/£6.66m/£8.057m/£8.266m/£6.319m/£5.551m/£5.626m

Match receipts did not go up 20% as claimed by glick.

Overall from 2005 to 2011 they went up 12%.

Is this just due to inflation?

Sorry Tom, but match receipts follow success on the pitch, peaking with promotion and declining thereafter.

Nothing to do with your imaginary super-human ability to increase receipts despite relegation.

In fact match receipts went down during that period.

Sponsorship&Advertising   £1.229m/£1.072m/£1.738m/£2.37m/£2.252m/£2.087m/£2m

Tom hinchey claimed to have more than doubled income from Sponsorship and advertising.

True if you compare 2006 with 2008.

Again though, this will be related to promotion to the prem rather than to his own commercial genius.

this income also declined following relegation which suggests it was not related to any radical new ideas which he had and which had never been tried before .e.g. Shirt sponsorship?

TV   £1.003m/£1.339m/£32.16m/£14.848m/£15.984m/£5.188m/£4.963m

This is where the money is. Premier league status automatically brings massive amounts of tv money.

And no doubt this is the key factor linking success on the field with increased sponsorship revenues too.

Commercial Activities  £2.225m/£2.783m/£4.086m/£3.364m/£2.915m/£3.022m/£2.653m

Similarly income from commercial activity follows success on the pitch, and falls with declining fortunes.

Glicks claim to have doubled commercial income since 2008 is not substantiated.

Merchandising   £1.373m/£1.383m/£1.807m/£1.703m/£1.578m/£1.461m/£1.217m

Peaks and falls with promotion and relegation. No overall increase. In fact its slightly down.

These guys seem to be experts at self-promotion and don't appear to let the facts get in the way.

These guys spin for a living.

My guess is that we are in for more of the same.

You did fine RamNut,and I agree with your points (I merely added detail).

It was interesting to note that,up to and including 07/08,sponsorship and advertising were identified separately. From 08/09 onwards the two were lumped together (in other words you couldn't compare sponsorship only and advertising only figures from 08/09.Why was it done-your guess is as good as mine).

Commercial income is a good one as well, because there's a line in the accounts devoted to commercial revenue. Therefore if you wanted to talk about commercial income you could spin it any way you wished (depending on what you included).
