how do we know he isn't?

Here's hoping- he should be embarrassed with his "contribution" last season. With the assumption that he is one of our highest earners it is good to see him being put in his place by youngsters coming through and being signed (hopefully Caton will get a look in the first team if signed).

He's okay without pace, providing he's got upper body strength instead. Commons was fine because he was strong enough to hold off opponents. Otherwise we end up with someone like Lee Holmes, who had the talent to beat a man but had neither the pace to run away from him or the strength to hold him off. So he would beat his man a few times but would give the ball away straight afterwards and then give up trying to beat his man and become useless.

If he's a free signing on low wages then we can't go wrong really. It looks to me like Clough wants to stick with the lopsided 442 we played for the second half of last season (with an out and out winger on one side and a midfielder tucking in on the other). If Caton has work rate etc to go with his skill then maybe he can do a job as a 'tucking in' wide midfielder.
