McRamFan
Its a question of buying either proven or potential, and potential is cheaper, however has the associated risk involved with that. For example; Shackell and Barker where moving into the proven bracket and cost £2m for the pair. Bryson and Maguire where proven in a different league cost £1m and one has flown out the blocks, the other has struggled. Tyson is potential, Ward was out of favour and they were free, add into that home grown, Bennett, Ball, O'Brian etc and we are developing nicely. Out right proven players, Maynard, Sharp cost 4-6 times, and at this time we do not have the cash flow to get them. If Bennett has a flyer next season and Arsenal buy him for 12m, then we can look at players in the 4-5m bracket,
bcnram
In true football manager style I think the best players for each position (out of 5 stars are) Goalkeepers Frank Fielding - **** Adam Legzdins - ** Right backs John Brayford - **** Paul Green - ** Centre Backs Shaun Barker - **** Jason Shackell - **** Mark O'Brien - *** Miles Addison - *** Jake Buxton - ** Tom Naylor - * Left Back Gareth Roberts - ** Right Midfield Paul Green - ** Ben Davies - ** Centre Midfield Craig Bryson - *** Paul Green - *** James Bailey - *** Tom Carroll - *** Jeff Hendrick - *** Left Midfield Jamie Ward - **** Strikers Steve Davies - *** Callum Ball - ** Nathan Tyson - ** Theo Robinson - ** Mason Bennett - ** Looking at this, and guessing you'd need all your team to be my interpretation of at least 3 stars, we need a new right midfielder (another jamie ward), a new striker, a new left back and cover for right back/left midfield, and then we've got a pretty damn good team. I suspect that Nigel Clough's interpretation of most of those players will be different to yours 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

CumbrianRam
Depends on whether the players we buy turn out to be Brysons or Maguires, as the players we buy are mostly gambles, then they could all go either way. Every transfer is a gamble. Rob Hulse at 1.75 mill turned to be decent Nathan Ellington on a 2 mill loan fee turned out be a disaster!
curb
You usually minimise the risk by paying money for consistent performers at this level. (unless your name is Paul Jewell and don't know your arse from your elbow). Yes, there will always be exceptions to the rule. IMO Barker and Shackell were not gambles, whereas the vast majority of signings since GSE took over have been. Maybe that's a case of Cloughie insisting on some quality in one of the most important positions on the pitch, I don't know, but generally the sort of players we've filled the squad with so far you can get away with buying on the cheap, but when it comes to that bit of quality up front or a good creative midfielder then it tends to cost a bit more. Which IMO is what we are needing now to progress.

curb
I did say there will always be exceptions to the rule, if there wasn't it would be easy, for every Torres, Carroll and £5m center back that has failed there will be a lot more that are successes, but I think you know that. davenportram
just thought I would post this - here is the squad as will be in the summer if no new contracts, extensions or oprions on players taken up Keepers Frank Fielding..............2014 Adam Legzdins.............2014 Full Backs John Brayford..............2014 Centre Halves Miles Addison.......2013 Jason Shackell.....2014 Shaun Barker ......2014 Mark O'brien........2015 Tom Naylor............2015 Midfield Ben Davies..........2013 Jamie Ward ........2013 plus one year option James Bailey.......2013 Craig Bryson.......2014 Chris Maguire .....2014 Jeff Hendrick.......2015 Strikers Theo Robinson ....2013 plus 1 year option Nathan Tyson .....2014 Callum Ball ..........2014 Mason Bennett.....2016.(until he's 20 apparently) thats 18 players all with at least one years experience of regularly being part of the first team squad ( excpet Naylor and Bennet) Naylor I think is the cheap replacement for Buxton. Think we could see B Davies and Maguire leave in the summer making it 14 established first team players plus Naylor and Bennett Needed - two full backs, utility player to cover full back positions and a striker to pop it in the net and an experienced midfield general. We will need to bring in several players over the summer in order to have a squad of a size enough to cover injuries etc.... throguh the course of the Championship season. p.shilton
We're a mid table championship team at present, to move to the next level, we need a new left back, Yes Roberts has been good but he's not getting any younger and is mistake prone, covering right back, only have 1 rb at club, experienced central midfielder, Green will be leaving, Carroll won't be permanent so we only have Bails, Bryson and Hendrick in that department, proven goalscorer, current crop of strikers are too raw and injury prone and another centre back, if barks or shacks get injured then we have to rely on Buxton and the untried Naylor. Oh and Billy Sharp Or the tried Obrien ( I know he is injured at the mo) and Addison

NothernRam
Croft signed a 3 year deal in 2009 so contract rubs out in 2012 It must be mistake in DET? Rams winger Lee Croft could also be on the move. The 26-year-old is wanted by St Johnstone and is believed to be close to joining the Scottish Premier League club on loan. His contract at Derby runs to the summer of 2013. "It is an opportunity for Lee to go and get some games with a view to doing something in the summer," said manager Nigel Clough. Croft has not featured for Derby since the middle of October. He is not in the squad for tonight's Derbyshire Senior Cup tie against Pinxton. Hearts have been charged with "failing to behave with the utmost good faith" over the delayed payment of player wages. The SPL said January's wages did not arrive on time. Hearts refute the claim.
