I particularly liked the one that quoted McClaren as saying to wait and judge them after the international break. It was then speculated that perhaps he mean't Euro 2012...... 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Steve McClaren has won a crucial power struggle in his bid to save his job at Nottingham Forest - after the shock departure of David Pleat.

McClaren’s troubled reign has received a timely boost after ex-Spurs boss Pleat left his £120,000-a-year job as a football consultant at the City Ground.

Former England coach McClaren is under heavy pressure after a nightmare start - Tuesday night's humiliating 5-1 defeat to Burnley leaving him just three points off the bottom of the Championship.

But he has scored a major triumph after making it clear that he would not work with Pleat, who has been told to leave his post by close friend and Forest chairman Nigel Doughty.

Pleat, 66, was brought in by Doughty in August 2006 to assist the board on transfers and recommending players, but his presence has been a constant source of frustration for Forest’s managers.

McClaren’s predecessor, Billy Davies, fought a long-running battle to get Pleat ousted and managed to get the club's much-maligned transfer panel disbanded last season.

But Davies was sacked in June while Pleat stayed on, and McClaren has been running into problems ever since his appointment.

Earlier in the season, it is understood, Pleat invited Fulham winger Keanu Marsh-Brown to a trial with a view to a loan deal, without consulting McClaren.

Marsh-Brown, 19, turned up in Nottingham but was promptly sent packing by a stunned McClaren, who made his feelings clear to Doughty.

Forest’s lack of signings in the transfer window increased the frustration and McClaren even considered walking out after just three months.

But he told Doughty during showdown talks that either he or Pleat would have to leave - and Pleat’s exit was confirmed earlier this week.

McClaren has won only two out of nine Championship games, but will be given time and backing to turn around the club’s poor start.

Following the Burnley debacle, he has been given the green light to continue lining up new loan players.

QPR midfielder Lee Cook may sign after playing for the reserves against Stoke on Wednesday, along with trialist Dutch forward Riga Mustapha.

McClaren is also trying to identify other younger, cheaper players who can come in and give his team more energy.

Doesn't really change the fact that Forest can only really afford the kind of players that McClaren has 0% knowledge of.

Sounds like he'll continue his policy of gambling on hasbeens. Reid, Greening, Boateng - none of those have worked out.

And he doesn't seem to have the ability to make it work for him. He is struggling to get decent performances from players who did well enough last year.

Any hope of success surely went out the window when he kept the players out at HT v Burnley.

That just doesn't work. They won't play for him now. Humiliation might work for the odd character, but the whole team?? Some will be glad to see the back of him I bet.

Billy's method was to get players fit, play higher tempo, and work like dogs.....

The other day Gabby Logan laughed that Derby's improvement must be because we got rid of Sav.

Whilst that might seem a bit harsh, there is more than a germ of truth in it.

Sav could never have played at the pace with which we set about Barnsley....

In fairness to the poison dwarf, I can understand his grievances about the board installing a sub-bureaucracy. What happened to the days of just managers and chairman working together?

So does the latest news mean Shteve will have a blank cheque in January to avoid relegation?

Not concerned about bennett going tbh; the guy has played less than 10 games in about 3 years and has never really recovered from the serious injury he had but i wish him the best. Nice guy and good to see forest looking after players when they have a serious injury by saying we would give him a new one year deal if he couldnt get a club and not just telling him to retire though ey boys 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

As for the moose, he will either sign for a prem club or forest from what i gather; with it looking likely that forest are very close to agreeing a deal.

after watching your lot at the shitty ground mate id sell all the c#unts!!!!!!

David Pleat has told ESPNsoccernet he has stepped down from his role as a transfer consultant to Nottingham Forest and that he has been offered a role as 'associate director'.

Pleat had been under fire for his part-time position on Forest's much-maligned 'Transfer Acquisition Panel', with former manager Billy Davies having publicly criticised his influence on the club's market activity.

Current boss Steve McClaren - who regularly spoke out about his frustration with the lack of signings during the summer - is also said to have been unhappy with Pleat, and the Nottingham Post reported McClaren "winning a power battle with the former Spurs boss" on Thursday morning.

However, Pleat has indicated to ESPNsoccernet that he has been a great supporter of McClaren and revealed he could yet take another role at the City Ground.

"It is a very amicable decision that I have now stepped down as part-time consultant," Pleat said. "The club have very generously offered me the role as associate director and this is something I am thinking over."

ESPNsoccernet believes, however, that Pleat may turn down the opportunity to join the Forest board as he prepares to consider offers from elsewhere.

Forest have reached the Championship play-offs in the previous two seasons but have endured a dismal start to the current campaign under McClaren and currently sit just one point outside the relegation zone.

Embaressing stuff to say the least at the moment. I think the sacking of random board isn't good enough either. Pick another sacrificial lamb Lord Doughty. One whose name begins with steve...

Actually sort of hoping we lose of Sunday so hes finally gets rid. Can't afford to go on much longer!
