Except it isn't 'safe mode' when he dawdles on it and invites pressure, it's Bradley Johnson syndrome. There are times he seems to lack awareness of the dangers around him and is too slow to think (on the ball) or react (off it)

He’s the victim of being stuck in a system where we have slow possession (doesn’t suit him) and where he is required to drop deep facing his own goal to play the ball out of defence. It’s not a system that plays to his strengths and as a result he’s made bad mistakes that have probably affected his confidence on the ball.  Lucky for him, nor is it a system that appeals to Warne.

Yeah it was pretty disappointing.  Good chance though that we’ll more and more play a style of football that suits him. And that - as PE requires the players to be more energetic and aggressive out of possession - he’ll become a regular
