Here are some more stats about the top 3 to make your head hurt.

Home games remaining:

Against top half teams:

Bournemouth 6

Derby 5

Boro 2

Against bottom half teams:

Boro 6

Derby 3

Bournemouth 3

Away games remaining:

Against top half teams:

Boro 7

Derby 3

Bournemouth 3

Against bottom half teams:

Derby 6

Bournemouth 5

Boro 2

Points gained against top half teams

Derby 25

Boro 22

Bournemouth 19

Points gained against bottom half teams

Bournemouth 38

Boro 34

Derby 32

I think the key statistics here are Boro away at the top teams. They beat Brentford, drew with Blackburn,  lost to Ipswich and Wolves. They still have to travel to Bournemouth, Derby, Watford, Norwich, Shef Weds, Birmingham and Florist. That's a tough lot of games.

In March, Boro play Ipswich, Bournemouth and Derby in consecutive games.

Wowser. Without trawling the stats, I assume our goals conceded accounts for more than 100% of the improvement in overall goal difference? I had just formed the impression that we were somehow less flamboyant and free scoring than last season?

One goal less is less free scoring? hmmmm

As I said - just an impression formed. But what might be more accurate is that we were more extreme last season in our scoring - last year by this time we had a 5 away from home at Millwall and one at home to 'pool, a 4 (Ipswich) and a few 3's (Yeovil, Leeds, Wednesday). So this season it felt like we were a bit behind with big scores (one 5, two 4's but not as many 3's?)

However at the other end of the scale I suspect we must have had quite a number of blanks or 1's last season that have become 2's.

thanks to Martyn for answering the call. Back to sleep...
