Sheffield Wednesday keeper Chris Kirkland required treatment after being attacked by a fan during his team's Championship game with Leeds United.

Former Liverpool and England keeper Kirkland, 31, had just conceded a 77th-minute equaliser to Michael Tonge as Leeds fought back to draw 1-1.

“I'm not proud to be Leeds manager when I see that. I thought it was an absolute disgrace”
Neil Warnock Leeds United manager

Moments later, a fan from the Leeds end ran on to the pitch and struck Kirkland with such force he fell to the ground.

Owls boss Dave Jones called for Leeds fans to be banned from away grounds.

"They should be banned from every away ground now," said Jones, who was taunted by visiting fans' chants during the game.

"They are vile animals. You talk about racism, the chanting, that's a form of racism. And then [for the Leeds players] to go and wave at them... not in my book. You don't wave at them after that.

"They should be punished. I've had it for 12 years and it is just upsetting that they are able to do it.

"The authorities have to look at it and sort it. I'm talking about an incident when we should be talking about the football."

Jay Bothroyd had put the hosts ahead in the 44th minute at Wednesday's Hillsborough ground.

Kirkland was able to continue, but Leeds boss Neil Warnock said he was "embarrassed" to be a manager.

Leeds United statement

"Leeds United Football Club would like to publicly apologise and condemn the action of the fan who came on the pitch and attacked Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

"The club will fully co-operate with the police and the football authorities in identifying the individual concerned.

"After the week football has endured there is no place for this type of behaviour and the majority of Leeds supporters will be ashamed of his actions."

"I thought it was an absolute disgrace. They should get the guy, prosecute him, put him in prison," said Warnock.

"I'm not proud to be Leeds manager when I see that.

"I don't mind the atmosphere, there's been elbows flying, but to see things like that on the field of play, I'm embarrassed."

Kirkland, who joined the Owls from Wigan in May on a two-year contract, won one England cap in 2006 when he came on as a substitute in a 4-0 friendly win against Greece at Old Trafford.

Leeds, who had 5,300 fans in the crowd of 28,582, released a statement after the game.

It read: "Leeds United would like to publicly apologise and condemn the action of the fan who came on the pitch and attacked Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

"The club will fully co-operate with the police and the football authorities in identifying the individual concerned.

"After the week football has endured there is no place for this type of behaviour and the majority of Leeds supporters will be ashamed of his actions."

I see that skank that clouted Kirkland has just been sentenced to 4 months...so he'll be out by Christmas.

The authorities did well getting him to court sharpish but they let themselves down with his sentence, should have a minimum of 6 months behind bars in my opinion.

Chris Kirkland attack: Man jailed for assault

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/63635000/jpg/_63635430_016296565Chris Kirkland required treatment after being knocked down

A man has been jailed after running on to the pitch and hitting a goalkeeper during a Championship football match.

Sheffield Wednesday's Chris Kirkland, 31, required treatment after being struck in the face during Friday's game against Leeds United.

Leeds fan Aaron Cawley, 21, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, pleaded guilty at Sheffield Magistrates Court to assault and entering the field.

He was given a 16-week jail sentence and a five-year football banning order.

Leeds United has said the club intends to ban him from its Elland Road stadium for life.

'So drunk'

Kirkland, who has played once for England, was pushed to the ground moments after conceding an equaliser in the 76th minute of the match at Hillsborough, which finished in a 1-1 draw.

The court heard Cawley had been drinking heavily and had already breached two previous banning orders.

Prosecutor Paul Macauley said Cawley told police he had drunk a number of cans of lager and three-quarters of a litre of vodka before arriving in Sheffield and then had a further seven to 10 pints of cider.

Mr Macauley said he was "so drunk" he did not remember what happened, and only realised after seeing the footage.

District Judge Redhouse heard that Cawley emailed the police to say sorry and also emailed Sky Sports, who broadcast the match, in the hope his apology would be passed on to the two clubs and Kirkland.

His solicitor, Elizabeth Anderton, tried to tell the judge reports her client had bragged about the incident in social networking sites were wrong.

But District Judge Redhouse stopped her, saying she had not seen the reports and was not interested.

Couldn't agree more, should have been made an example of with a longer sentence

The news papers are saying the leeds fan who got sent away, was banned before for throwing things at people in wheel chairs.

He's had bans since he was 16.

4 months will not stop someone like that. But just read that the max sentence the judge could have given was 6 months.

The Judge must have felt sorry for him & let him out for Christmas

6 months eh?

So if I was to clobber Camp at Pride Park I would be out in time for our first fixture next season and could have another swing?

Leeds fans might have stumbled upon something here.

Don't do it Alpha !

Leeds would get away with it Derby & Forest would be hammered

Anyway if Camp Knocked you out you would never live it down
